Just two weeks ago, Louisiana baseball got swept by Texas State on the road.
Fourth time was the charm for the Ragin Cajuns. With the postseason squarely on the line, UL (35-21) delivered in crunch time, edging the top-seeded Bobcats 3-2 on Saturday night in Montgomery, Alabama, to advance to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship game.
The Ragin' Cajuns, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit against Texas State (44-12), will face No. 2 seed Georgia Southern (40-17) on Sunday (1 p.m. CT, ESPN+) at Riverwalk Stadium. It will be their first Sun Belt championship game appearance in six seasons.
UL beats South Alabama: Louisiana baseball belts South Alabama in Sun Belt Tournament to advance to semifinals
Good to be home
Tyler Robertson is enjoying his trip back home to Montgomery with the pressure mounting.
In his first three at-bats against the Bobcats, the 6-foot-4 cleanup hitter belted two home runs, the first a two-run homer and the second a solo shot that gave Louisiana it lead, 3-2, in the fifth. He had just three home runs coming into the game.
Robertson's three RBIs proved to be the difference as he finished 2-for-4.
UL starting pitcher Jacob Shultz turns in gutsy outing
Giving up a couple of runs early and seeing the Bobcats load the bases in the second, the outing could've gone either way for Schultz. But the right-hander buckled down and proceeded to threw a gem. He struck out a career-high 12, 10 of those coming after the second.
Schultz turned in a gutsy performance as he gave UL a chance to extend its season. He pumped a career-high 142 pitches in a complete game, giving up just two runs off six hits against the most potent offense in the Sun Belt.
Louisiana baseball remains in NCAA regional conversation
The Texas State game was must-win for UL and its shot at backdooring a spot in the NCAA Tournament. As it stands, the Cajuns' RPI (57) sits too low for serious consideration by the selection committee.
Louisiana can take its regional fate into its own hands by capturing the Sun Belt's automatic bid by beating Georgia Southern.
