Louisiana is the fifth luckiest state with 2.2 jackpot winners per million people

A new report shows that Louisiana ranks fifth in the luckiest states in the country with 2.2 jackpot winners per million people in the last 20 years.

OLBG, an online guide to betting sites, analyzed the states with the highest number of jackpot winners per million people and revealed the states with the highest average jackpot win per person, and the states with the overall highest number of jackpot winners.

The website compiled every Powerball jackpot winner in the last 20 years from Powerball and used Wikipedia to make a list of every Mega Millions winner whose jackpot total was $300 million or more. They also used World Population Review to find the population of each state as of 2023.

Delaware was named the luckiest state in the country, according to the study, with the most jackpot winners per million people and has seen a total of five lucky winners.

Maine was named the state with the highest average jackpot win per person, with the average win per person in the state totaling $1.35 billion. The average wins in the state are over three times the amount of some of the other states in the top ten list.

Coming in behind Maine is California with an average jackpot win of $529.45 million per person and Illinois with an average jackpot win of $455.13 million per person.

Pennsylvania takes the top spot as the state with the most overall jackpot winners, with 18 winners in the last 20 years. New York and Florida are joint second in the ranking of the most overall jackpot winners in the last 20 years with 17 winners.

Florida is also home to some big jackpot wins, including a $1.59 billion Powerball jackpot that was recently won by a Floridian.
