Montrell Johnson Jr., the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns' standout freshman running back, is the latest Ragin’ Cajun to enter the NCAA transfer portal, a UL spokesman confirmed Tuesday.

Johnson joins starting right guard O’Cyrus Torrence, starting cornerback Mekhi Garner and freshman offensive lineman Kam Waites in entering the portal in recent days.

New Cajuns coach Michael Desormeaux was not available to comment on the transfer portal moves, the spokesman said.

Florida already has announced the addition of Waites, a 358-pound Texan from Dallas who joined the Cajuns as a freshman last offseason and appeared in three games.

He is the first Cajuns player to join Florida since former UL coach Billy Napier was named the Gators’ coach in late November.

Napier also has taken several former Cajun staffers to Florida, including defensive coordinator Patrick Toney, running backs coach Jabbar Juluke, assistant offensive lineman coach Darnell Stapleton and multiple key members of UL’s football recruiting and strength and conditioning departments.

Napier also flipped former UL commit Christian Williams, an offensive lineman from Texas, to Florida.

Desormeaux was promoted from tight ends coach/co-offensive coordinator after Napier left for the Florida.

Napier coached the Sun Belt game against App State, then officially left for Florida the next day. Desormeaux coached the bowl game, which marked the 13th straight win for UL (13-1).

Johnson, a product of De La Salle High in New Orleans, rushed 161 times for 784 yards and a team-high 12 touchdowns as a true freshman in 2021.

Torrence, a third-year sophomore and three-year starter from St. Helena Central High in Greensburg, opened all but one game as a true freshman in 2019 and all 11 games in 2020. He has been offered by Michigan State, Clemson, Ole Miss and Auburn since entering the portal.

Garner, a regular starter most of the past two years, just completed his third season with the Cajuns. He transferred to UL after one season at Navarro (Texas) College.

Johnson, Torrence and Garner all are considered future NFL prospects. None of the three have announced their future plans, but each is also a candidate to join Napier at Florida.

Also Tuesday, a UL spokesperson confirmed offensive tackle Max Mitchell and safety Percy Butler both have been picked to take part in the upcoming NFL Draft Combine.
