Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards reacted Wednesday to Shreveport's latest mass shooting, asking for prayers for victims and offering the State Police to assist local law enforcement with the case.

Four people are dead and seven more injured following the shooting just after midnight Wednesday morning that occurred during a July Fourth holiday block party.

“The mass shooting in Shreveport on July Fourth is both deeply disturbing and heartbreaking," Edwards said in a statement to USA Today Network. "I’m asking everyone to pray for the families who lost loved ones and for those survivors who are recovering.

"This was an annual celebration, and everyone who was in attendance deserved to have an enjoyable and safe time. There is no excuse for why such a celebratory occasion turned into a devastating tragedy.

"Sadly, it was one of several unnecessary shootings across our country (during the holiday). Local law enforcement is doing everything possible to bring those responsible to justice. Louisiana State Police has offered to help and will continue to be available to provide any necessary assistance.”

Wednesday's violence was the fourth mass shooting in Shreveport this year. USA Today defines a mass shooting as four or more people injured by gunfire other than the shooter.
