Louisiana reports first Hurricane Delta death
The state of Louisiana reported its first Hurricane Delta-related death Sunday as 348,000 remained without power after the storm battered the state on Friday and Saturday.
Gov. John Bel Edwards said an 86-year-old was killed in a fire after trying to refill a gas-powered generator, according to the Monroe News Star.
“I want to remind everyone that there was only one of the 30 Laura deaths that was directly caused by the storm,” Edwards said, referencing the storm that swept through the state several weeks ago and saw many people killed by generator problems and in various accidents during clean up.
About half of the residents who lost electricity during the storm had had their service restored by Sunday afternoon, Bel Edwards said.
The governor added that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would be installing tarps on damaged roofs if the homes and businesses were still inhabitable.
Bel Edwards noted that many homes and businesses were damaged again after being damaged by Hurricane Laura.
“It’s going to set us back, but it’s not going to dictate our future,” Edwards said.
The state is currently sheltering more than 9,000 people affected by the two storms.
