Louisiana schools get a B in 2022, match pre-pandemic scores
Louisiana public schools generally improved from the 2020-2021 school year to the 2021-2022 school year, earning a B statewide, according to data from the Louisiana Department of Education.
The scores are now at the same level as before the pandemic, scoring 77.1 in both the 2019 and 2022 school years. In 2021, the state had a simulated score of 75.3, according to LDE.
“Returning our statewide performance score to its pre-pandemic level is reason to be thankful, but we have a long way to go for Louisiana’s children,” said Louisiana State Superintendent Cade Brumley in a news release. “We must continue to act with urgency to provide even better outcomes moving forward - that’s the challenge we must meet.”
The improved results came despite the state’s system facing multiple hurricanes and COVID-19. The districts did not receive letter grades based on the simulated scores in 2021.
Statewide, 48 of the 63 traditional public school systems improved from 2021 to 2022, and 30 districts have matched or exceeded their pre-COVID scores.
Louisiana education board votes down controversial school accountability changes
Since 2021, the state has seen improvements in state assessments, ACT results, dropout numbers, and expanded school interests and opportunities measures. It’s the first year that interests and opportunities have been included in the official school performance scores, counting for 5% of the total.
Louisiana has generally avoided some of the devastating learning loss that schools and districts across the nation have experienced as a result of disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The state has issued school performance scores for public schools since 1999. In 2021, the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education waived its policies on school performance scores and letter grades in 2021, though unofficial results were released showing where the scores would have been during the year.
Louisiana ACT scores rank fifth-worst in US, state's average dropped every year since 2017
