Louisiana State Police investigating Lafayette officer involved shooting

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Louisiana State Police reported they have been requested by the Lafayette Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting.

Lafayette Police said officers responded to the 100 block of Shady Ridge Lane around 2:37 p.m. Sunday in reference to a domestic disturbance in progress with weapons. Upon arrival, officers said they met with two victims in which the dispatch call had originated.

After an initial investigation, officials said they learned the suspect, Drevian Dugas, 23, of Gueydan, was in possession of a rifle and there was another victim still with him. Based on information provided by the victims, authorities determined the LPD SWAT was needed.

While attempting to stop the Dugas’ from leaving in his vehicle in the 100 block of New Center Drive, an officer discharged his weapon.

Following the shooting, Dugas quickly left the area in his vehicle with the victim still inside. As officer pursued him, he began driving erratically and struck a vehicle in the 2300 block of Kaliste Saloom Road at the intersection of Lake Farm Road causing it to overturn, according to authorities.

Dugas’ vehicle then slid into oncoming traffic where it struck a second vehicle. His vehicle was then pinned in by an LPD unit to prevent him from escaping.

The victim inside the vehicle was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. The driver and passenger of the first vehicle struck by Dugas were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. Dugas was taken into custody and was treated for his injuries at a local hospital, but is now in jail, officials said.

Dugas is charged with domestic abuse battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, an unspecified gun charge and on outstanding warrants from Vermilion Parish, according to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.

This is an ongoing investigation and more updates will be provided as information becomes available. LSP are also investigating the officer involved shooting that occurred prior to the pursuit.
