Louisiana Tech football coach Sonny Cumbie named transfer Matthew Downing as the starter following Monday's practice, the university confirmed to the News-Star.

Downing played at TCU in 2020 under Cumbie, who at the time offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Last season with TCU, the redshirt junior saw action in three games, completing 3-of-4 passes for 26 yards. He ran the ball once for two yards. He was 17-of-30 for 168 yards with a touchdown and interception in 2020. He didn't play in 2019. In 2018 at Georgia, he was 8-of-10 for 88 yards.

The Bulldogs will open the season at Missouri on Sept. 1 (7 p.m., ESPNU).
