Louisiana Tech is running thin at quarterback after reserves Aaron Allen and J.D. Head entered the transfer portal, depleting to Bulldogs at the position entering the first offseason under coach Sonny Cumbie.

Allen, who appeared in seven games this season, entered the portal on Monday, less than a week after Tech hired Cumbie to replace Skip Holtz. Head, who appeared in four games, entered the portal on Friday.

The departures leave Louisiana Tech (3-9) with two quarterbacks on its roster: graduate transfer Luke Anthony and redshirt freshman Caleb Holstein, who has yet to make his college debut.

Anthony, who began his career at Abilene Christian, becomes the only Tech quarterback with college experience.

He played for the Bulldogs in the 2020 season, completing 138 of 221 passes for 1,479 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions before suffering a compound fracture in his lower right leg Dec. 12 against TCU. The injury required emergency surgery.

Despite the injury, Anthony was named Conference USA newcomer of the year in 2020. He did not play this season while still recovering from the injury.

Anthony's injury led Holtz to bring in Austin Kendall as the starter for his final year of eligibility.

The Bulldogs are set to bring in three-star quarterback Landry Lyddy as part of its current signing class. Lyddy threw for 4,237 yards and 57 touchdowns as a senior.

The NCAA's early signing period begins Dec. 15.
