Louisiana voter registration guide for presidential preference primary elections

It may seem early to be thinking about voting in Louisiana's presidential preference primary elections on March 23, 2024, but candidates who wanted to appear on the presidential ballot qualified Dec. 13-15.

So if you're a Republican or Democrat who wants to vote in next spring's presidential primary elections, following are some important dates:

  • The deadline to register to vote in person, by mail or at the Office of Motor Vehicles is is Feb. 21.

  • The deadline to register to vote online through the Louisiana Secretary of State's website is March 2.

  • Early voting is March 9-16 (excluding Sunday, March 10) from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

  • The deadline to request an absentee ballot is March 19 by 4:30 p.m (other than military and overseas voters).

  • Absentee ballots can be requested online at https://voterportal.sos.la.gov/ or in writing from the parish registrar of voters.

  • The deadline for a registrar of voters to receive a voted absentee ballot is March 22 by 4:30 p.m. (other than military and overseas voters).

  • On election day March 23, 2024, the polls are open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
