Louisville-area theatres celebrate National Cinema Day with $4 tickets Sunday

Whether it's a new release like "Barbie" or an old favorite like "Jurassic Park," moviegoers will be able to score $4 tickets for the second iteration of National Cinema Day this Sunday.

More than 3,000 theaters nationwide are participating, according to a report from the Associated Press, including several in Louisville. Many of the other movies included in the deal are new releases such as "Oppenheimer," "Gran Turismo" and "Meg 2: The Trench" along with older films including 1973's "American Graffiti" and 2021's "Tove."

"Building on the unprecedented success of last year’s inaugural National Cinema Day, the Cinema Foundation is calling on film fans across the country to gather for a national day to celebrate the magic of the movies on the big screen," the National Cinema Foundation said as reported by USA TODAY.

Guests can score $4 tickets for Louisville-area theaters at the following theaters:

  • Cinemark Mall St. Matthews and XD, 5000 Shelbyville Road

  • AMC Stonybrook, 2745 S. Hurstbourne Parkway

  • Cinemark Tinseltown Louisville and XD, 4400 Towne Center Drive

  • Phoenix Theatres New Albany, 300 Professional Court

"The second annual National Cinema Day celebrates the power of movies to bring us all together, and discounted admissions for all movies at participating U.S. theaters in all formats (including Premium Large Format screens) will be no more than $4," the foundation said.

According to the AP, folks made last year's event the most attended day of the year for theaters with an estimated 8.1 million tickets sold — though they were $3 in 2022.

This year's box office sales have been strong, in part due to the weeks-long runs of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer." Through Sunday, there have been $3.8 billion in ticket sales this year, the AP reported. That's nearly 17% more than the same time in 2022.
