Louisville baseball sweeps top-ranked Notre Dame in weekend series

The Louisville baseball team will be ranked next week.

The Cardinals (16-4, 3-0) finished a weekend sweep of No. 1 Notre Dame with a 7-5 win Sunday. Winners of 15 of their last 17 games, the Cardinals were on fire entering the ACC opener and never wavered against the top-ranked Irish.

In three games, Louisville scored 31 runs, beating Notre Dame 16-11 on Friday and 8-1 on Saturday. Before this weekend, Notre Dame hadn't given up 28 runs the entire season.

Led by a balanced lineup, Louisville tallied 30 hits in the weekend and got home run swings from Isaac Humphrey, Cameron Masterman, Ben Metzinger, Levi Usher and Ben Bianco. Louisville's offensive explosion came against an Irish team ranked second in the country in earned run average. Louisville, though, is ranked in the Top 5 nationally in runs.

Winners on the mound were Kyle Walter (Sunday), Evan Webster (Saturday) and Ryan Hawks (Friday). While it was an offensive weekend, Jared Poland put together another impressive performance Saturday — throwing seven innings, giving up just three hits and allowing no earned runs.

The Cardinals will now go into a midweek game against Libscomb on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before going on the road for the first time since the opening weekend at Boston College.
