Louisville vs. Texas A&M baseball live updates: Aggies finish off Cards in super regional

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — No. 5 Texas A&M has yet to lose a game in postseason play, and Louisville baseball couldn't change that.

The No. 12 Cardinals fell to the Aggies 4-3 in Game 2 of an NCAA Tournament super regional, ending the year with a 42-21-1 record. After being down 2-0 after the first two innings, TAMU tied the game twice at 2-2 and 3-3 before taking the 4-3 lead in the seventh inning.

Louisville struggled to drive in runs, leaving 10 batters on base, including Christian Knapczyk, who was in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth inning when relief pitcher Jacob Palisch struck out Jack Payton to end the game.

Less than 24 hours prior, the Aggies rallied from a 4-2 deficit early Saturday morning and took Game 1 with a walk-off single to right field from catcher Troy Claunch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Keys to the series: These 6 players will help decide Louisville baseball's super regional vs. Texas A&M

"We were close — maybe one swing away — and we got a chance overcome, so I'm anxious to see us play tomorrow," McDonnell said after the walk-off loss in the wee hours of Saturday morning. "Knowing what we know and having seen (the A&M home atmosphere) in person, I'd like to think they're gonna enjoy it even more."

Sophomore Riley Phillips got the start on the mound for U of L with its season on the line. The lefty was coming off the best start of his young career in Game 4 of the Louisville Regional, when he allowed just one run on two hits and struck out a career-high 11 batters across five innings.

Opposing Phillips is A&M junior Micah Dallas. The righty is 6-3 in 14 starts with a 5.38 ERA and 79 strikeouts across 72 innings.

"He's gonna have to have all his pitches going and try to keep (Louisville) off base. They're certainly tough to deal with," Texas A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle said. "He knows from this point forward it's straight about guts and grit. I don't know how it's gonna play out."
