JCPS cancels student activities again; tornado confirmed in Kentucky

Severe weather moved through the region Sunday evening and overnight leaving thousands without power.

Due to power outages and other storm damage, Jefferson County Public Schools canceled Backpack League and Lit& at the Stuart/Frost Academy Tuesday, though activities resumed normal schedules at other campuses, community sites, camps, summer learning, summer school and the Elev8 Student Learning Center, according to spokesperson Carolyn Callahan. This is the second straight day activities have been canceled.

The National Weather Service also confirmed a preliminary EF-2 tornado that touched down in Hardin County during its storm surveys.

LG&E-KU is reporting about 4,400 customers are still without power in Jefferson and Oldham counties Tuesday morning.

Monday update:

Some people took to social media to show surveys of damage brought on by the storms.

One user called @jstylist502 captured a video of "wild" clouds rolling into the region.

User @moljett captured heavy rain and hail from inside her car during one of the several waves of thunderstorms.

The Louisville Metro Golf account tweeted photos of extensive hail damage at the Pete Dye course in French Lick, Indiana.

10:40 p.m.: Storms moving through area

According to radar, the storms that hit the area Sunday evening are moving through, leaving some damage behind and around 30,000 customers without power, according to LG&E-KU outage map.

9:45 p.m.: JCPS cancels activities at the Stuart/Frost location

Due to a power outage and storm damage, Jefferson County Public Schools announced plans to cancel Backpack League and Lit& activities at the Stuart/Frost location Monday.

9:30 p.m.: Power outages down to 27,000

According to the LG&E-KU outage map, the number of customers without power has decreased to 26,608 though the number of events has increased to 401.

9:05 p.m.: Storms heavier; outages top 30,000

As the second round of severe weather moves through Jefferson County, the intensity of the rain has increased.

According to the LG&E-KU outage map, the number of customers without power has increased to 30,502 from 361 events. Outages are increasing in the eastern part of the county.

8:50 p.m.: Power outages increase to nearly 25,000

According to the LG&E-KU outage map, the number of customers without power has increased to 24,503 from 323 events.

8:15 p.m.: Severe thunderstorm warning

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for northeastern Jefferson, Shelby, Oldham counties until 8:45 p.m.

According to the LG&E-KU outage map, 9,400 customers are without power, mainly in the southwest parts of Jefferson County.

7:05 p.m.: Flood advisory until 10 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory until 10 p.m. for a portion of North Central Kentucky including Jefferson County.

The Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Jefferson County has expired.

6:48 p.m.: Severe thunderstorm warning includes surrounding areas

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 7:15 p.m. for Jeffersontown, Mount Washington and Elk Creek.

6:36 p.m.: Severe thunderstorm warning continues for Jefferson County and Indiana

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued until 7 p.m. for Jefferson County and surrounding areas after a thunderstorm was located above St. Dennis and was moving southeast at 35 mph. winds up to 70 mph and hail are possible.

6:15 p.m.: Tornado warning for part of Jefferson County

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning lasting until 6:45 p.m. for Shively, Corydon, Indiana and New Salisbury, Indiana.

6:10 p.m.: National Weather Service issues severe thunderstorm warning for Jefferson County

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning lasting until 6:15 p.m. for Southwestern Jefferson County and surrounding areas in Southern Indiana with considerable damage as a possibility after a thunderstorm was located above Corydon, Indiana, traveling southeast around 35 mph.

5:45 p.m.: Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Southern Indiana

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for Corydon, Palmyra and Milltown in Indiana until 6:00 p.m. The storm could produce golf ball-sized hail.

South winds 6 to 10 mph becoming west in the evening. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Monday: A 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 4 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. West winds 7 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.
