Louisville volleyball vs Baylor: How to watch, stream NCAA Sweet 16; what to know

Louisville volleyball is back in the Sweet 16 after cruising through the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

The No. 1 Cardinals beat Samford and No. 8 Purdue by 3-0 scores and will host No. 4 Baylor next weekend as it looks to return to the Final Four for the second year in a row. Should U of L win, it will face the winner of No. 2 Nebraska and No. 3 Oregon.

This is just the second meeting between Louisville and Baylor; the Bears won the first meeting 3-1 in 1985.

The Cardinals will take on the Bears on Thursday at KFC Yum! Center. Their game will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of Oregon-Nebraska, which starts at 11 a.m.

Louisville (28-2, 17-1) won the Atlantic Coast Conference title during the regular season with its only losses against Ohio State and Pittsburgh, two other Sweet 16 teams. The Cardinals have had little trouble in the early stages of the NCAA Tournament, sweeping Samford and then Purdue 3-0 on back to back nights. Against Samford, Aiko Jones had a game-high 11 kills and two aces. She also had two blocks. Against Purdue, Claire Chaussee led the way with 12 kills, four blocks and two assists.

Claire leads U of L with 391 kills (3.8 kills per set), Raquel Lazaro has 992 assists from her setter spot and Jones leads the team with 42 aces. On defense, Amaya Tillman has a team-best 146 blocks and Elena Scott has 404 digs.

How did Baylor Bears volleyball get to Sweet 16?

Baylor (25-6) went 12-4 in the Big 12, finishing second behind Texas (24-1, 15-1) with two losses to the Longhorns. The Bears swept Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 3-0 but had a more difficult time Friday with Rice, winning 3-2 with 19 kills and 10 digs from Lauren Harrison and a near double-double from Kara McGhee (12 kills, nine blocks). Avery Carlson dished out 54 assists and had 11 digs in the five-set victory.

Harrison leads Baylor with 340 kills, but the Bears have four other players with at least 220 — McGhee (278), Elise McGhee (266), Allie Sczech (226) and Mallory Talbert (221). Kara McGhee has a team-best 172 blocks, and Sczech is also in triple digits (104). Carlson has 1,232 assists (10.8 per set) from her setter spot, and Lauren Briseno has a team-high 34 aces.
