Louisville women's basketball beats Pitt in ACC action: Final score, highlights, recap

Cards hang on: Louisville survives scare to beat Pitt as 2013 national runner-up team honored at halftime

Louisville women's basketball guard Hailey Van Lith had a chance to reminisce Thursday night following the Cardinals’ 63-55 win over Georgia Tech.

She reflected on the reason why she left her home state of Washington and came to Louisville: because of the program’s “dog persona.”

“That's what I think is inside me,” Van Lith said. "I related to that team that I watched. They were tough, and they were competitive.”

The gritty, tough culture was enough to sell Van Lith on coming to Louisville over Baylor, her second choice coming out of Cashmere High School in 2019. Her love for competition has made her one of the best players in the country, averaging 20.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists for the year. Yet, the thing she loved about Louisville women’s basketball seems to be missing.

“I think last year's team loved to compete, and this year, we're not quite there yet,” she said, “but we're starting to get girls to buy in. If we can get all 13 or 14, however many we have, to buy into just being elite competitors, we're going to be hard to beat no matter if we score the ball or not because that's just a team that doesn't give up. So that's what I would like to see us become.”

Graduate guard Mykasa Robinson, three wins away from tying the program record for career victories, can attest to what Van Lith is saying and agreed with her teammate.

“We should have a lot more heart and passion, I feel like,” said Robinson, who played her 141st game as a Cardinal on Thursday. “I think that's what Louisville basketball's been about, and I think that's what we need to pour into more.”

Louisville (12-5, 3-1 ACC) can take the next step by sweeping the season series against Pitt at 2 p.m. Sunday at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals downed the Panthers at their place last month 77-53 and will have to do it again at home to stay among the top teams in the ACC standings.
