Louisville's airport adds nonstop service to another major US city

Flights from Louisville to the Twin Cities are about to get a lot easier.

In a release Tuesday morning, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport said it will add service from Sun Country Airlines, which will offer a nonstop flight from Louisville to Minneapolis beginning next spring.

"This is a great day for the Louisville (sic) as we welcome Sun Country to Bourbon Country," said Dan Mann, executive director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority. "Sun Country provides area travelers another option to reach the Twin Cities and offers low-fare connections to other major destinations in the west."

The new service will take off for the first time on May 4, 2023, according to the release – just days before the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby.

The nonstop flight will be offered twice weekly, according to the release, on Mondays and Fridays. Tickets are on sale at suncountry.com.

Grant Whitney, Sun Country's chief revenue officer, said the company is "excited to launch this new, nonstop route for Minnesotans who want to explore the Louisville area and all it has to offer."

"The region has a world-class reputation built on great attractions - including Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, historical districts, museums, art, food and so much more. It appeals to travelers of all ages with many different interests," Whitney wrote in a release. "We're thrilled to add the Bourbon City to our growing Sun Country network."

Minneapolis, meanwhile, is known for its parks system, its professional sports franchises – the city is home to the Minnesota Vikings (NFL), Minnesota Twins (MLB) and Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA) – along with the massive Mall of America shopping center.

The service will also allow connections to Sun Country's network of flights throughout the U.S., Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and Canada, according to the release. Sun Country operates 102 routes at 82 airports across the U.S., Mexico, Central America, Canada and the Caribbean, according to the release.
