Louisville's July 2022 homicides: What we know about the 14 cases

Police officers in Louisville investigated 14 homicides over the course of July 2022, with at least fatal 10 shootings in that time.

Arrests have been made in seven of the cases, and police have indicated charges are not expected to be filed in another.

By the end of July, Louisville had suffered 104 homicides in 2022.

What we know about July 2022's homicides:

Tamal Wood and Torie Myers

Several overnight shootings at the end of July left two people dead another in critical condition.

Officers responded to the 3600 block of Georgetown Place 9 p.m. on July 28, where they found a man who had been shot. He was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital and later died, according to LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell.

The man was later identified as Tamal Wood.

Four people in total have been charged over Wood's death . D’Andre Swain Jr., 18, was arrested on Oct. 25, and 19-year-old Armani Shrivers was arrested on Nov. 1. The two men have each been charged with complicity murder, first-degree wanton endangerment and tampering with physical evidence.

Two more teens, both 17, were arrested on Nov. 9 and charged with complicity murder, receiving stolen property over $10,000, wanton endangerment and tampering with physical evidence in connection with the shooting, according to a statement from LMPD. The two juveniles were not identified, and LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis said additional arrests are not expected, though the investigation is still open.

On July 29, LMPD said in a separate statement, officers responded to South Brook and East Kentucky streets at 6:30 a.m., where they found a man and woman inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The woman was later identified as Torie Myers, 48.

Paul Archer

Archer, 61, was shot and killed early July 28 in the Beechmont neighborhood.

Officers responded to the rear alley of the 4600 block of Southern Parkway at about 3 a.m., according to LMPD, where they found Archer, who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, with the Jefferson County Coroner's Office reporting he'd been shot multiple times.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Dennis Kos

Kos, 38, died July 26 after being assaulted at his home, according to LMPD.

Officers responded to the 1100 block of East St. Catherine Street at about 5:30 p.m., where they found on the Kos, according to a statement from the department. EMS began performing life-saving treatment and Kos was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

About a month later, on Aug. 30, two people were arrested and charged with his murder.

Gregory Rhodes and Josie Hart were arrested for an alleged robbery and kidnapping of a Bardstown man one day before Kos' killing. During the interrogation relating to that case, Hart confessed to being present at the time of Kos' death and identified Rhodes as the person who strangled him, according to her arrest citation.

Rhodes confessed to helping to move Kos' body, according to his arrest citation.

Both were being held at Metro Corrections - Rhodes with a $500,000 cash bond and Hart with a $1 million cash bond.

Darionna Jones

Jones, 20, was shot and killed on July 24 in the St. Denis neighborhood, LMPD said.

Officers responded to the 3200 block of Melody Acres just before 9 p.m., according to a release from LMPD, where they found Darriona Jones suffering from at least one gunshot.

She was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital, where police said she was later pronounced dead. LMPD later confirmed the victim was pregnant at the time of the shooting.

Devin Minor, 21, was arrested in connection with the murder of Jones, LMPD said in a statement on July 25. The press release said he was charged with murder, first-degree fetal homicide and intimidating a participant in the legal process.

Minor and the victim had a child together, who was in the home moments before the shooting occurred according to his arrest citation. Jones' mother told police all four of them were inside an apartment when she saw Minor had a gun. When a verbal argument between Minor and Jones began, Jones' mother took the other child outside, the citation said. She then heard a loud pop and Minor ran outside, according to his arrest citation from LMPD.

When she asked Minor if he shot her daughter, the citation said Minor brandished the gun and asked her if she were going to call 911. After she put her in phone in her pocket, according to the report, he fled the scene. Jones had been shot in the torso, the citation said, and she was several months pregnant.

Lavonne Cooper

Lavonne Cooper, 40, died July 22 after being shot in Louisville's Portland neighborhood, according to LMPD.

First Division officers responded to a call of a shooting shortly before 10 p.m. in the 500 block of North 22nd Street at Boone's Marathon Gas Station, LMPD spokesperson Alicia Smiley said. She said officers found Cooper suffering from a gunshot wound and took her to U of L Hospital, where she later died.

Smiley said 15 minutes after officers brought the victim to the hospital, a man and a woman believed to be involved in the incident went to Jewish Hospital. The woman had a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and the man had been hit by shrapnel.

LaTodd Allen was arrested in connection with the murder of Cooper, a release from LMPD said on July 25. He was charged with murder, first-degree assault, tampering with physical evidence and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Martel Porter

Martel Porter, 33, died July 18 due to injuries he'd sustained about a week earlier, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

A release from the office said Porter died due to blunt force injuries sustained from an assault on July 10, which happened at 1st and Oak streets.

Officers responded to the scene after a call of a shooting and upon arrival, found Porter had been taken to the hospital in a private vehicle, according to a release sent by LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell after the coroner's identification.

Man dies after being hit by a truck in Russell

One of two men wounded after being struck by a pickup truck July 17 succumbed to his injuries the following day, according to LMPD.

Officers responded to 19th and Jefferson Streets at about 1:55 a.m. on a report of a crash, police said at the time. The department's preliminary investigation showed two men were standing outside a vehicle when an unknown man intentionally struck them with the truck then fled the scene.

Both victims were taken to the U of L Hospital, where one of them later died, LMPD later said. The other man suffered non-life threatening injuries.

No arrests have been made. The man who was killed has not yet been identified.

Rykess Ford

A man who was shot July 11 died later died from his injuries, according to LMPD.

Officers responded to the 3600 block of Georgetown Place about 2 p.m., LMPD said, and found a man who had been shot. He was taken to the U of L Hospital in critical condition and died the same day, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

He was identified as Rykess Ford, 27.

Kasey Hunley

Two days after being stabbed in Pleasure Ridge Park, LMPD announced the man succumbed to his injuries on July 13 at University of Louisville Hospital.

Officers responded to 6800 block of Cappella Lane just before 5 p.m. July 11, where they found the man suffering from a laceration, according to LMPD. He was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The man who was killed was identified as 28-year-old Kasey Hunley by Deputy Coroner Michael E. Haag of the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

There were no suspects in custody as of July 13.

Ter-Voina Moore

A 15-year-old who died July 6 after being shot days earlier in Louisville's Smoketown neighborhood has been identified as Ter-Voina Moore, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

Fourth Division officers responded to a shooting July 2 near South Jackson Street and Roselane Court where they found Moore and another female teen shot, according to LMPD.

Both teens were taken to the U of L Hospital, where Moore died. The second victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis.

No arrests have been made.

Emilio Suarez

A man was killed in a homicide in Louisville's Kenwood Hill neighborhood on July 7, and another man was later charged with murder in the case.

Officers from LMPD's Third Division responded to a report of a shooting in the 7300 block of Southside Drive about 5:20 p.m., the department said in a statement. One man, later identified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as Emilio Mart-Suarez, was found dead, and the other was shot in the leg and taken to U of L Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Jorge Ortiz was arrested on Sept. 20 and charged with murder and first-degree assault, according to court records. In his arrest citation, LMPD said Ortiz had been involved in a dispute over money and that Ortiz shot the two men after following them to an apartment complex. The man who survived the shooting's account was corroborated by the location of Ortiz's phone before the shooting, the citation said.

Ortiz was set to be arraigned on Sept. 21.

Boy killed in Park Hill neighborhood

A boy shot early July 3 has died from his injuries, LMPD officials said the following day.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 2200 block of Wilson Avenue around 3:50 a.m. and found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound that was considered life-threatening, police said. He was transported to an area hospital where he later died.

He has not yet been identified.

No arrests have been made in connection with the case.

Davon Banks

A man is facing charges in the death of Davon Banks, a 30-year-old Louisville man killed on July 2 in the city's California neighborhood.

Officers responded to a reported stabbing at a residence in the 2200 block of Garland Avenue around 11 a.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found three victims suffering from large lacerations caused by a machete.

Two women were taken to the University of Louisville Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Banks was pronounced dead at the scene.

Elvis Anderson Jr. was charged with one count of murder and two counts of assault in connection with the stabbings.

Anderson confessed to his role in the killing, according to his LMPD arrest citation.
