The Friends of the Library Work Room at Eugenia H. Young Memorial Library was humming with activity Wednesday as book lovers browsed shelves, piled stacks of books in their arms and chatted with each other during the year's first pop-up book sale.

Literature lovers will want to take note - and bring cash and a big bag - of the next 11 Friends of the Cleveland County Library System's pop-up sales scheduled throughout 2024.

Jann Ford, president of Friends of the Library, said the books for the sale are donated to them to re-sell, and the proceeds then go back into the library to support various projects.

"We're able to donate to the libraries' projects, including the mobile library," Ford said.

The Cleveland County Library System is in the process of purchasing the vehicle, which will bring books, Wi-Fi, classes and crafts all around the county and make the library more accessible to people who may not be able to make it to the building.

In addition to helping fund the mobile library, the proceeds of the sale will also contribute to the expansion and improvement of the North Carolina room at the Eugenia H. Young Memorial Library.

Ford said the microfiche reader's printer in the N.C. Room needs updating, and the room itself will be expanded.

"That's one of our projects for this year," she said. "That's where the book sale money goes back into the library."

Another 2024 project is an addition at Spangler Branch Library in Lawndale. Ford said the building hasn't been updated since 2005 and this year, a multi-purpose room will be added. It can be used for meetings and by the community for book clubs or other groups. Ford said it will include a kitchen for demonstrations, during meetings and other uses.

The Spangler project is primarily being funded through a state grant, C.D. Spangler Foundation and other donations, Ford said.

Ford said the book sale doesn't just raise money, however, but it also provides new homes for books that might otherwise be discarded.

The books are 50 cents to $1 for children's books, $2 for hard covers, $1 for soft covers, and there is a shelf of romance and older books that are $1 to fill up a bag.

The book sale has fiction, history, memoirs, cook books, travel and children's books.

There are best sellers and even some new releases as recent as 2023.

Cash and checks are accepted but cash is preferred.

The sales will be held at the Eugenia H. Young Memorial Library, at 104 Howie Drive, in the Friends of the Library Work Room.
