Love In A Digital Age: The Wedding Cake Topper That ‘Captures Modern Romance’

You’d think your wedding day might be the one day you manage to step away from the mobile phone, but one unusual cake topper is reflecting the difficulty some couples have in taking a digital detox, even on the day they get married.
On first glance the cake topper at the wedding of Dieter Bohn and Lisa Brewster looked totally traditional. But as guests at the nuptials in the Dominican Republic peered a little closer they noticed that the bride and groom sitting on top of the cake weren’t in fact hugging as it appeared, but looking at the screens of their mobile phones.
Sharing a picture of the figurines to Twitter, Casey Newton, who was a guest at the wedding, laughingly captioned the snapshot: “This cake topper really captures modern romance.”

While many took the topper in the light-hearted spirit it was meant, posting comments such as “Make the bride do a selfie, and I’m buying this. just to put on my desk!” Other friends of the couple, who both work in technology, were a little more shocked about the ‘joke’ with one responding simply: “OH MY GODDDDDDDD.”
The unusual nod to the digital world could well have been modelled on a Banksy artwork Mobile Lovers which featured on the wall of a Bristol youth club two years ago and featured a couple embracing while at the same time peering at their mobile phones.
