I've been trying to get myself back into a daily running routine, and the same thing keeps happening. Inevitably, sometime between leaving the office and arriving home, I wonder what's for dinner, imagine the slapdash post-run cooking, and my resolve to exercise weakens. I've had many a salad out of the giant salad bowl after a long run when I'm too tired to wash another dish. I've also ending up eating cold leftovers (ok, mini-wheels of Babybel cheese) while standing in front of the fridge more than once. But during the years of drifting in and out of a running routine, I've firmed up another routine: I like to cook a proper dinner and sit down to enjoy it.

That's where my Joule Sous Vide wand comes in, which is $60 off this Amazon Prime Day. I had previously only used my Joule when cooking for a crowd—it's great for making perfectly-cooked proteins and tender veggies while you enjoy a cocktail instead of stovetop splatter. But then one day I decided to whip it out for weeknight dinner, and learned it's actually perfect for meals for one or two in a hurry (as long as you do a little bit of planning).

Unlike preheating an oven and dirtying a pan for a single chicken breast or filet of salmon, you can just drop one in a plastic bag—or a silicone bag, if you're nervous about the plastic leaching—add your seasoning, toss it into a pot of water with your Joule, and go about your evening until the timer goes off. When it does, the Joule will immediately turn off and your dish will stay warm in the water bath, which gradually cools down. Now, I throw fish filets, thinly cut steak, or a piece of chicken in a little bag with a bit of seasoning in the morning, and in the evening, I toss them into a pot of water with my Joule, lace up, and get out the door. When I get home, sometimes I still have salad out of the tossing bowl, sure—but it's accompanied by a perfectly tender protein, no clean up needed.

My sister's birthday is coming up, and I know she has the same issue. Her dog needs a long walk after work which usually includes a stop to pick up takeout. She's not that big on new cooking techniques, but it's virtually impossible to overcook with a sous vide because all the moisture stays in the bag. Plus, our editors found out that Joule is really designed for beginners with its simple in-app controls, recipes, and video guides.

She lives out of state, so we try to FaceTime over dinner a few nights a week. Hopefully, once I gift her a Joule, we can compare notes on tender salmon instead of single-serving cheese flavors.
