Love shopping second hand? Here are 4 of the best flea markets to shop at in Rhode Island

It’s the thrill of spending the day on a treasure hunt that hopefully – if luck is with you – ends with something no one else has at a price that can’t be beaten.

It's shopping at the flea markets, a tradition that goes all the way back to 1860s Paris.

With flea market season upon us, we rounded up four flea markets in Rhode Island worth checking out. Some of them are curated affairs – with a mix of secondhand items and handcrafted small businesses — and others are more anything-goes.

If you like to hunt for unique items, here are four flea markets in the Ocean State to check out.

Providence Flea

When: Sundays from 10 a.m to 3 p.m., June 4 to Sept. 24

It’s not just secondhand and antique goods at this flea market. This marketplace includes small and micro businesses that sell hand-picked, homemade, handcrafted and/or small-batch items. There are food trucks and live music at this market that has an undeniably cool vibe.

Plainfield Pike Flea Market

When: Sundays from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 16 through Nov. 19

Where: 2111 Plainfield Pike, Johnston

A classic flea market and the largest in the state, this market is 10 acres with room for more than 200 vendors. It’s the sort of market where deals are made, and buyers should be prepared to dig to find that one perfect item.

The General’s Market

When: Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 28 to Oct. 8

Where: The General Stanton Inn, 4115 Old Post Road, Charlestown

The oldest flea market in the state, this market is a blend of antiques, vintage items and arts. With a beautiful location right by the sea and by the inn that dates back to 1740, it’s a charming way to spend a Sunday.

The Old Mill Vintage Marketplace & Flea

When: Saturday and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., year-round

Where: 3 Bridal Ave., West Warwick

The only indoor flea market on this list, this market runs year-round in an old textile mill. Because it’s inside, it combines the feel of an antiques mall with the flea market experience of talking directly to the vendors.
