Update: In July of 2021, HBO confirmed the news that they have cancelled Lovecraft Country. “We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country,” HBO said in a statement, per Deadline. “We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.” Green later shared a preview of what might have been on Twitter:

However, season one will be getting some attention this weekend, at the Emmy Awards. The series was nominated for a whopping 18 awards, with categories including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series.

Original: Lovecraft Country hooked fans from the jump with its intriguing mix of period tropes and supernatural monsters, leveraged to expose the reality of America's inescapable, institutionalized racism. And with the bulk of season one's episodes out of the way, viewers are beginning to wonder if they'll have a second run to look forward to.

So will there be a Lovecraft Country season two? Here's what we know so far.

Nothing's official yet.

HBO has yet to officially renew or cancel the series, which isn't that surprising, given that the entire first season still has yet to air. It was originally billed as a series, not a limited series or a miniseries, so it wasn't necessarily planned as a one-off—though that doesn't guarantee that it'll return.

The show has received mixed reviews from critics, but the ratings have been pretty good, with the series premiere drawing 1.4 million viewers—a number similar to the premiere ratings for Watchmen, one of HBO's biggest hits of the last year.

If there is a season two, the writers may have to stray from their source material.

Lovecraft Country is adapted from Matt Ruff's 2016 novel of the same name. Based on the episodes released thus far, it seems like this season is using much of the book's plot already, so a second season would have to go beyond Ruff's story.

But the show was never a one-for-one adaptation. "We essentially used the book as a beautiful jumping-off point," Green explained in an interview with HBO. "My strategy was to take all of its dope, cool stuff and write new dope, cool stuff."
