‘Lovecraft Country’ Star Jonathan Majors on ‘Ant-Man 3,’ Joining the MCU and Those ‘Creed’ Rumors

Jonathan Majors had just come from a boxing session with his trainer when he joined me for an interview for Tuesday’s episode of “Just for Variety.”

I couldn’t help but wonder if the workout was to prepare him for his upcoming work in the next “Ant-Man” movie or the third “Creed” to be directed by Michael B. Jordan. “To be an actor, it’s a lifestyle so you always have to be ready for everything,” Major says, choosing his words carefully. “So none of the above and all of the above.”

Here, more highlights from my chat with Majors.

He heard about “Lovecraft Country” from his team as well as his “White Boy Rick” director Yann Demange. After getting the part of Atticus, he began reading more of Misha Green’s scripts for the series. “I was in Thailand at the time…and my mind was blown. It was blown,” Majors remembers. “I was like, ‘You’re kidding. You’re kidding me!’ I’m texting [writer and showrunner] Misha Green. I mean, the time zone is completely fucked. But I’m hitting her. She’s hitting me back. You know, she’s a writer so she has writer’s hours. I’m like, ‘This is incredible.’

He hasn’t always been an “Ant-Man” fan. But don’t take that the wrong way. He says he’s seen all the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of his fondest memories is a “daddy Sunday” with his birth father going to see “Infinity War.” “They’re Greek,” Majors opines. “The size of them. The things they’re dealing with. The idea of fate and fantasy and future and legacy.” As for speculation that he may pop as Kang the Conqueror in “Loki” on Disney Plus, Majors doesn’t blink. “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” he says.

He hopes to be in “Creed III.” “Fingers crossed,” Majors says of reports he’s joining the boxing franchise. He first watched a “Rocky” movie on a VHS with his grandfather in Waco, Texas.

Ouch! Majors broke his heel while filming the upcoming Western “The Harder They Fall.” The ensemble of the Jaymes Samiel-directed and Jay-Z-produced drama also includes Regina King, Idris Elba, LaKeith Stanfield, Zazie Beets and Edi Gathegi. “The cool part of the heel fracture is like you can’t do anything about it,” Majors says. “It’s just like, it what it is.” When he limped onto the Savannah set of his followup movie “Devotion,” director J.D. Dillard assumed it was part of the character. “He was like, ‘I thought you had just made a choice,’” Majors recalls. “I was like, ‘I love you for that.’”
