CANTON ‒ Douglas G. Adkins loved animals, fishing and playing pool and table tennis.

"He was loved by many!" Tonya Love wrote about her 67-year-old father who died Dec. 5 after being shot at his home in southwest Canton on Dec. 1.

A 28-year-old Akron woman, Chabrijuana J. Glenn, is being held in the Stark County Jail on a murder charge filed by Canton police. She is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Thursday in Canton Municipal Court, where her bail was set at $2 million Monday.

Her lawyer Scott W. O'Meara said she is not guilty.

Police have not disclosed a motive for the crime.

"It's an ongoing investigation, so our office can't talk much about it," said Kristina M. Lockwood, chief assistant Canton prosecutor.

Son Tim Rue described Adkins, who had worked as a salesman, as outgoing and caring.

"He would give you the shirt off of his own back," Rue wrote in a text message. "His doors were open to anyone that needed a place to stay. He was a very giving person."

Rue, a Youngstown resident, recalled his father as a ladies' man, pool shark and someone who always had a positive outlook — even on bad days. He said he never saw his father without a smile on his face.

"He had (three) little dogs," Rue wrote. "He liked working on cars and he could walk you through working on one as if he was looking at it right there with you."

Rue believes that his father felt threatened on the day he was shot at his home near 18th Street and Cleveland Avenue SW. He said the toolsthat police found near him on Dec. 1 were homemade nunchucks fashioned from two wrenches that were tied together.

"He was very good with them," Rue wrote. "He was a little guy but he could put the biggest guy down in the bar. But he wasn't violent at all unless he was protecting his self or his loved ones."

Rue wants to know why someone would kill a man like his father, whom he descibed as respectful, caring, understanding, giving, and humble — the kind of guy who would go out of his way to make an unhappy person smile.

"He could always brighten another's day," Rue wrote. "He just had a way with people. Something I wish I could be like myself."

Rue wrote that as far as he knows, his father grew up in an abusive foster home.

"So he genuinely had a kind heart," Rue wrote. "He cared so much in a world that is selfish and self-centered and he was so selfless and giving."

Love said a celebration of life for her father, who was receiving Supplemental Security Income, will be held in the future.

In addition to his children and grandchildren, she said, her father is survived by two brothers and was preceded in death by his mother, father and two brothers.
