Loved ones honor woman shot, killed in Orange Mound

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Loved ones gathered Wednesday to remember a woman who was shot and killed in Orange Mound as police continue to search for her killer.

Paula Appleberry’s community came together in the parking lot of General Electric in Olive Branch, Mississippi where she worked. Through tears, beloved coworkers and family now comfort each other following her death.

Appleberry was shot at the intersection of Park and Pendelton Sunday night as she drove her grandchildren home from a birthday party.

Her children are left stunned, saying she was a woman of faith.

“This was senseless. This was senseless. There’s no other way around it. No, my mother was not targeted. No, that bullet was not meant for her,” said her daughter Tierney Irby. “If this was a case of mistaken identity, I don’t see how you could mistake someone with God’s number one fan on their tag.”

“She was genuine. She was loyal. She was understanding. She was peaceful at times, at times but she was a mother nonetheless.” said her son Jarvis Irby.

Another life is lost as the city of Memphis grapples with crime and calls for change. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee addressed the issue Tuesday.

“It’s our job to show Tennesseans that there’s a commitment for them to live in neighborhoods that are safe,” he said.

Gov. Lee pointed to the addition of more state troopers in Shelby County and said there are more to come along with $50 million that will go to various Shelby County law enforcement agencies to tackle violent crime.

“We have to make an impact on crime in this city. We have to recognize that the local leadership here can partner with the state,” Lee said.

So far, no one has been arrested. If you know anything that could help police, call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
