The controversy over Jason Aldean’s song “Try That In a Small Town” has been a topic of conversation all over, especially between his fellow country singers — some of whom have either called out Aldean, or vocally stand behind him.

This time it’s “Cover Me Up” artist Jason Isbell, whose July 19 tweet at Aldean has raised some eyebrows, especially those of “Homemade” singer Jake Owen.

Isbell took to Twitter to challenge Aldean to compose his own work. The song — which has gathered national attention after it was dropped by the Country Music Television network after complaints about pro-gun lyrics and “racist undertones” — was written by Kelley Lovelace, Neil Thrasher, Tully Kennedy and Kurt Allison.

“Dare Aldean to write his next single himself,” Isbell said. “That’s what we try in my small town.”

Then, Isbel asked Aldean how he could defend the song if he didn’t write it.

“Seriously how do you defend the content of a song you weren’t even in the room for?” Isbell asked. “You just got it from your producer. If you’d been there when it was written, you’d be listed as a writer. We all know how this works.”

The tweet seemed to strike a chord with Owen, who called him out.

“Jason, you’re always the first to get behind your keyboard and spout off with this stupid s***,” Owen tweeted. “In ‘my small town’ you just walk up to the guy and be a man to his face if you want the smoke, not tweet it at him… Tough guy.”

The exchange between the two went on for a couple more tweets, one of which included Isbell defending his words and saying that he attempted to tag Aldean in the original tweet, but tagged the wrong account.

Isbell also appeared to take offense to Owen’s “tough guy” comment.

“What really gets me about this is that it’s saying ‘if you don’t believe you can physically overpower me, you aren’t allowed to publicly disagree with me.’ What does that say to the people in your life who aren’t big strong boys? They just have to shut up?” Isbell wrote.

Owen then posted a lengthy Twitter thread, explaining why he took offense to Isbell’s first tweet.

“I’ve spent my entire career trying to promote positivity. At my shows, off the stage, wherever I am,” Owen said. “I don’t like division or hate. That’s why I responded to the previous tweet. Being crass, I replied bc I was offended by @JasonIsbell insinuation that “if you don’t write your own songs, you’re less than or not a real artist...”

In addition to the conversational lyrics to “Try That In A Small Town,” heated debate has been escalating over Aldean’s video, which was filmed in front of a courthouse in Tennessee where Henry Choate, a Black teenager, was lynched publicly in 1927 by 350 white men, The Washington Post reported.
