The low-cost carrier Sun Country Airlines will offer biweekly nonstop flights to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport from Columbus this spring and summer, the Columbus Regional Airport Authority announced on Tuesday.

The first flight on May 4 will mark the first time Sun Country has flown out of John Glenn Columbus International Airport. Sun Country's website lists Columbus-Minneapolis flights starting at $49.

From May 4 to May 28, the seasonal flights will depart on Thursdays and Sundays, and from June 2 to Sept. 4, the flights will leave John Glenn on Fridays and Mondays, an airport authority spokesperson said.

The spokesperson noted that those schedules are subject to change and recommended checking the airport’s website before booking a flight.

Sun Country chose to offer flights between John Glenn and Minneapolis-St. Paul because Columbus is one of the top markets it does not serve, Senior Manager of Communications Amanda Theisen said in an email.

Delta Airlines also offers flights to Minneapolis-St. Paul from John Glenn.

Sun Country was founded in 1983, is based in Minneapolis, and operates around 100 routes throughout North America. The carrier also serves the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

In a news release, Sun Country Airlines chief revenue officer Grant Whitney noted that the Minneapolis-St. Paul area has numerous tourist attractions and entertainment options, “including Mall of America, world-class museums, lakes and parks, art galleries, incredible sports, music and entertainment venues, great restaurants, breweries and so much more.”

The region’s sports teams include the Minnesota United FC, which joined Major League Soccer in 2017, he said.

“We’re proud to offer Major League Soccer fans more opportunities to see the Columbus Crew and Minnesota United in action,” Whitney said.
