Low voter turnout topic of Aug. 17 workshop at the IHM Motherhouse

The interactive community workshop “Democracy Academy” will be offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 17 at Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Motherhouse, 610 W. Elm Ave.

The public is welcome. Refreshments will be provided. Registration is due by Aug. 14 by visiting mobilize.us/vnp/event/572329/.

“The nonpartisan group Voters Not Politicians is offering these learning workshops throughout the state. Monroe is one of the stops,” Sharon McNeil of Monroe and a member of the organization said.

“Democracy Academy” is the organization’s first community workshop. It will address low voter turnout in local elections.

“We will focus exclusively on municipal-level local elections, which include city councils/commissions, millages and school boards. County, state and federal elections will not be covered in this module,” Voters Not Politicians said.

Topics will include: How the current system encourages low turnout; the short- and long-term consequences of low voter participation; established voter engagement techniques to create positive change; and how to help others make elections a priority to make local government work better.
