Lower weight on bridge limits farmers

Jan. 25—A reduced weight limit on a bridge which is near dirt roads will limit the efficiency of farmers south of Creston who use the bridge.

Dale Fine spoke to Union County Board of Supervisors Monday about the bridge near Iris and 230th south of Creston that had its weight limit recently lowered from 13 tons to 6 tons.

"It's a concern of mine for getting products going to town," Fine said.

He said the weight limit on the bridge two to three years ago was dropped to 13 tons.

"It was not a big concern of mine, but I knew it would deteriorate and be lowered," he said.

Supervisors noted improvements to the bridge is a priority. Fine suggested a tube or a box culver to replace the bridge, which is about 20 feet in length, which would increase the weight limit. Supervisor Dennis Brown agreed with those suggestions.

"Iowa is number one in corn production," Fine said. "But a flip of the coin, Iowa is number one in infrastructure deterioration."
