A highly anticipated home improvement store could soon be starting construction in Leland.

Lowe’s Home Improvement received preliminary zoning and site plan approval to build a 113,860-square-foot store at the Leland Town Center. The store will also include a 27,720-square-foot garden center.

According to Leland planning director Ben Andrea, building permits have also been submitted and are pending approval now. A public service department review is the final hurdle before construction would be able to begin.

"Then, once the building permit fee is invoiced and paid by the applicant, the building permit will be issued," Andrea said.

The hardware store is slated for the corner of Ocean Gate Plaza and Gate Way Boulevard, behind Chick-Fil-A and Dunkin' Donuts.

A 7-Eleven, Cook Out restaurant and Take 5 Oil Change are also planned for that area of the Leland Town Center.
