Lowndes Winn-Dixie pharmacies closing Sept. 26

Sep. 19—VALDOSTA — All Winn-Dixie pharmacies in Lowndes County will close Sept. 26, store personnel said Monday.

The German supermarket chain Aldi announced in August it had struck a merger deal with Southeastern Grocers, which owns about 400 Winn-Dixie and Harvey's supermarkets in several Southern states.

While keeping the Winn Dixie and Harveys names alive, a decision will be made as to which stores will be converted into Aldi locations and which ones would still run under their old names.

"Prior to the closing of the proposed merger agreements ... Southeastern Grocers has entered into agreements to transfer prescription files to certain CVS Pharmacies and Walgreens," a Southeastern Grocers statement said Monday.

There are two Winn-Dixie supermarkets in Lowndes County, both with pharmacies: one in Valdosta and the other in Lake Park.

Both pharmacies confirmed by telephone Monday they are closing Sept. 26. In Lake Park, signs advertising "Welcome Winn-Dixie Customers" surrounded a competitor, Chancy Drugs, just down the road from the Lake Park Winn-Dixie store.
