SAULT STE. MARIE — The Soo Co-op Credit Union has established a new endowment to help support Lake Superior State University students.

The Lake Superior State University Career and Academic Services will be renamed the Soo Co-op Credit Union Career Services Resource Center as part of the endowment. The purpose is to assist LSSU students and support career services at the college.

According to officials, the new resources center will be a location where students will get access to anything that can help their planned academic and career paths. These programs involve helping students to focus their attentions and sharpen skills, helping them join the workforce quickly after graduation.

To rename the center, the credit union donated $30,000 to LSSU, with $5,000 of those funds becoming immediately available to students through various support initiatives.

“We are grateful to Soo Co-op Credit Union for their generous donation, which enables us to further elevate the quality and scope of services offered by our Career Services Resource Center,” said Lynn Gillette, LSSU's interim president. “This endowment will not only impact the current student body but will leave a lasting legacy, shaping the future careers of LSSU graduates for years to come.”

The new center will focus on helping students find success by funding various programs to help students directly and indirectly. For example, the university career fair, academic workshops and outreach programs will all be funded by this endowment.

One way the program directly helps students is by funding "Seamore’s Closet,” which offers LSSU students easy access to business attire. The program provides suits and other work-friendly clothes to students for free.

“We consider LSSU students as valuable members of our community and our future,” said Lynda Ellis, president of Soo Co-op Credit Union. “Our aim is to contribute to the success of all LSSU students by providing support to their career and academic services. This aligns with SCCU’s mission.”
