LSU football and Brian Kelly add former Notre Dame starting punter Jay Bramblett

LSU football has a new punter.

Jay Bramblett, who was a starter at Notre Dame, announced his commitment to the Tigers on Monday. He entered the transfer portal in early January.

“Heading down to the bayou!” Bramblett wrote on Twitter. “Couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity! Geaux Tigers!”

Avery Atkins, LSU's former starting punter, declared for the NFL Draft after the 2021 season.

Bramblett, a product of Hillcrest High in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was Notre Dame’s starting punter since 2019, his freshman season.

He averaged 44.1 yards per punt last season, including a career-long of 72 yards in a win over Wisconsin was the longest punt by an Irish player since a 79-yarder in 1998.

He reunites in Baton Rouge with former Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, who succeeded Ed Orgeron at LSU late last year, and former Notre Dame special teams coordinator Brian Polian, whom Kelly brought from South Bend.

Bramblett is the first former Notre Dame player to join Kelly in Baton Rouge and the ninth player to join LSU out the portal since Kelly took over, along with former Virginia inside linebacker West Weeks; former UL cornerback Mekhi Garner and former Ragin' Cajuns receiver Kyren Lacy; former Penn State running back Noah Cain; cornerback Greg Brooks Jr. and safety Joe Foucha, two former Arkansas teammates; and offensive tackle Miles Frazier (FIU) and long snapper Slade Roy (East Carolina).
