LSU women's basketball a 3-seed in 2023 NCAA Tournament, will meet Hawaii in March Madness

BATON ROUGE – It's been nearly a decade since LSU women's basketball has been a strong enough presence around women's college basketball to earn back-to-back NCAA Tournament bids.

But in year two, Kim Mulkey has done just that.

She officially has led the Tigers (28-2) to consecutive Marsh Madness appearance. The selection committee announced on Selection Sunday that LSU, a 3-seed in the Greenville 2 Region, will host No. 14 seed Hawaii to open the NCAA Tournament inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center Friday (4:30 p.m., ESPN2).

It marks the second straight season the Tigers have made it to Field of 68. Mulkey and her team will look to best the second-round exit to Ohio State at home to end last season.

LSU enters the postseason off just its second loss this season. Tennessee upset LSU, 69-67, in the SEC Tournament semifinals.

Before the season, Mulkey said the team's motto was "piece it together" and all the Tigers did was piece together one of the best seasons in program history at 28-2, including a record 23-0 start to 2022-23.

Star sophomore forward Angel Reese, who transferred in from Maryland, has been on the nation's top players and has been a revelation for Mulkey and LSU. Reese ranks fifth in scoring nationally (23.4 points) and second in rebounding (15.5) while recording a school-record 29 double-doubles in 30 games this season..
