Lt. Gov. lands new campaign treasurer for governor's race amid ongoing financial audit

Editor's note: This story has been updated to include the most recent job title of Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long's campaign treasurer.

Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, who is undergoing an audit of past finance reports, has a new campaign treasurer less than one month after she launched her run for governor, according to online filings.

The Committee to Elect Bethany Hall-Long updated its filings on Oct. 3 to show that Cheryl Webb of Dover is the new treasurer.

Until last week, Allison Murray was in the role. She is a partner of CFO Compliance, a firm that works with Democratic candidates and specializes in “state and local candidate compliance.” Murray, who served as treasurer since May, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Before Murray, Hall-Long’s husband Dana was treasurer.

A campaign spokeswoman said in a statement that Hall-Long is “so grateful for the people that helped us launch the campaign and are now moving on as we head into the next phase of the campaign, as well as those who have joined us.”

What is the status of the campaign finance review?

The lieutenant governor’s campaign has had a troubling start since it launched on Sept. 12. Just two weeks into the campaign, Hall-Long announced she is conducting an audit of all of her past campaign finance reports.

Campaign officials have not specified what was the catalyst for this review or when it will be completed. The campaign has repeatedly declined to answer Delaware Online/The News Journal’s questions on a timeline and if the report will be released to the public.

The campaign spokeswoman said in a statement that an “independent audit is currently underway and we look forward to having more information soon."

“Bethany has always led with integrity and transparency, and will continue to uphold those values throughout this campaign,” the spokeswoman said.

What's next for Hall-Long's campaign?

The News Journal previously reported how Hall-Long's campaign manager and fundraising consultant have left the campaign.

Some Hall-Long supporters have become distressed over the state of her campaign: Many Delaware politicos had once perceived the lieutenant governor to be the race’s frontrunner against New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer. But not all support has waned.

Webb, the new treasurer, said she works for the state’s Department of Insurance as a senior accountant.

She worked for the Department of Elections for nearly a decade as an election and voter registration clerk, which included “assisting with campaign finance," according to a LinkedIn profile.
