Lubbock Area United Way tops goal, sees $6.9M in contributions
Lubbock Area United Way announced that the community has contributed $5,903,976 to its annual campaign, surpassing its 2021 goal during their annual campaign celebration luncheon at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center on Tuesday.
The organization also announced an additional $1 million donation from The CH Foundation, marking just over $6.9 million in contributions announced this week.
Lubbock Area United Way announced its 2021 campaign goal of $5,882,846 back in August.
Campaign Chair Mark Griffin thanked all of the Lubbock Area United Way's 23 partner agencies who have invested their time, treasure, and talent to make the campaign successful.
“Inspiring new stories every day - that’s what United Way and its Community Partners are in the business of doing," Griffin said. "You are part of that. You are a thread in that tapestry of stories that stretches from 1946 all the way to today.”
Griffin added that, in its 75-year history, $204.2 million has been given by generations of West Texans to support the area United Way.
President and CEO Glenn Cochran also announced that, in recognition of the Lubbock Area United Way’s 75th anniversary, The CH Foundation pledged an additional $1 million gift to United Way’s endowment.
“The foundation trustees have been incredibly supportive community partners for many years, fulfilling its mission to significantly improve human services, cultural and educational opportunities for the residents in south plains,” Cochran said.
Robert Taylor, the 2020 Rita Harmon Volunteer Service Award honoree, was also recognized during the celebration.
“Robert himself has been an active volunteer and advocate, he has filled several leadership roles within the legendary United Way as a past president,” said Griffin.
Taylor, the former CEO of United Supermarkets, received the 2020 Rita Harmon Volunteer Service Award during the virtual celebration last year in recognition of his lifetime of community service.
“I kind of look back at my past - I feel like I've gotten a lot more and received a lot more out of volunteering than what I gave,” Taylor said.
Donations given through the Annual Campaign go toward the work of United Way and its Community Partners who work daily to assist people with needs such as affordable childcare, crisis situations, character development, literacy, job training, and youth mentoring.
