Who should be the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's Athlete of the Week?

Athletes from track and field and baseball turned in stellar performances last week and are among the finalists for Lone Star Varsity Athlete of the Week.

Coaches can nominate student-athletes in all varsity sports by sending an email by noon Sunday to sports@lubbockonline.com. Please include: name, grade, pertinent stats and use the subject head: "Athlete of the Week nomination" to ensure it's seen.

The poll opens Monday morning and will close at noon Thursday, with the winners announced Friday each week.

Female athletes

Sara Dy, Fr., Lubbock High — Won the 100-meter hurdles and placed second in the 300 hurdles and 1,600 relay — all in school-record times — at the Districts 3/4-5A area track and field meet.

Vida Mora, So., Muleshoe — Won the 200 and 400, in addition to anchoring the first-place 1,600 relay at the Districts 3/4-3A area meet.

Rylee Sanders, Jr., Frenship — Set a school record to win the 300 hurdles and ran a leg on the first-place 1,600 relay at the Districts 1/2-6A area meet.

Male athletes

Taye Brooks, Jr., Lubbock Christian — Hit 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI in a win over Gruver, collecting seven strikeouts in three innings of no-hit relief.

Jay Castillo, Jr., Snyder — Won the 400-meter dash in 49.43 seconds at the Districts 5/6-4A area meet.

Brody Langford, Sr., Olton — Threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts against Sudan, while hitting 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI, as the Mustangs clinched a share of their first district title in program history.
