Lubbock, Caprock Chronicles author Chuck Lanehart releases 'Marvels of the Texas Plains'

Fans of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's regular Caprock Chronicles feature - and West Texas history buffs in general - have some more reading to do.

Chuck Lanehart, a Lubbock criminal defense attorney, historian and regular Caprock Chronicles contributor, released a new book this fall - "Marvels of the Texas Plains - Historic Chronicles from the Courthouse to the Caprock." The book, which was released Oct. 24, shares often unexplored or underexplored stories from West Texas - from pre-historic man to Roy Orbison and more.

The book features some familiar tales Lanehart has explored in the Caprock Chronicles series as well as a few new ones that have come from his extensive work travelling, researching and interviewing sources on the South Plains and Texas Panhandle. The book's foreword is written by Monte Monroe, the newly re-appointed Texas State Historian and the archivist for Texas Tech University's Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library.

Lanehart told the Avalanche-Journal he's developed his passion for writing and storytelling since his time working for Texas Tech's University Daily student newspaper.

He said he enjoys telling often unexplored stories from around the region. A brief synopsis of the book shares that many thousands of years ago, Clovis Man hunted huge mammoths in this region. More recently, Waylon Jennings drew his musical inspiration here.

"In the intervening time, the Texas prairie has been the backdrop for the wildest of Wild West shootouts, landmark legal battles and epic achievements in sports, music and medicine," the synopsis reads.

The book is published by The History Press and is Lanehart's second book in two years, with "Tragedy and Triumph on the Texas Plains" coming out last spring. It's available for purchase online through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other retailers.
