Christian Women's Connection to meet

Lubbock Christian Women's Connection is scheduled to meet at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, at the Lubbock Country Club, 3400 Mesa Drive.

The theme of this month's luncheon and program is “Let the Fiesta Begin.”

Special speaker is Jeri Harkins of Hillsboro talking about "Putting Perfection First-Phooey."

The program will be Todd Curtis of Access to the Past showing treasures from estate sales

Cost of the luncheon, program and door prizes is $20.

Reese Center to host Tin-Man Robot battle

South Plains College Reese Center will host the SPC Robotics Class Tin-Man 2022 Robot Battle at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Building 6. The doors open at 6 p.m.

The event is free, and the public is welcome to attend. There will be a concession stand for purchasing snacks and drinks.

The Tin-Man Robot Competition features teams from the SPC Levelland campus, the SPC Reese Center campus and the SPC Plainview campus. High School teams from the surrounding area also compete in the contest. The teams will dress in costumes to show their spirit.

The annual battle pits teams that will fight to the death during the preliminary rounds. Time outs are allowed for students to make repairs throughout the competition.

The Tin-Man 2022 Champion will be determined by a panel of judges.

SPC to honor Law Enforcement grads

LEVELLAND — South Plains College will honor Basic Peace Officers during a ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday in the Sundown Room.

Special awards will be presented during the program. The awards will honor the class’ Valedictorian, Salutatorian and Top Gun Marksmanship.

Company Commander is Kaden Beynon and Squad leaders are Company A, directed by Latisha Lewis and Company B, directed by Chance Barnes, all of Lubbock.

The members of the graduating class from Lubbock are Barnes, Beynon, Lewis, Janelle Perez, Jalen M. Sandoval and Elias Soto.

Also graduating are Josue I. Alonso of Plainview, Rafael Esquivel of Lamesa and Avery Massey and Alexander Perez, both of Killeen.

10th annual Cinco de Mayo parade planned

Make plans to be a part of the 10th annual Cinco de Mayo parade scheduled for Saturday down historic Broadway.

The 2022 theme is "!Que Dulce es la Vida: How Sweet is Life!"

Organizations, schools, youth, and families are especially urged to be a part of this year's parade and celebrate this cultural history and the contributions of the Mexican American community.

Participants are asked to decorate their float in a sweet theme rich in color and life and are urged to toss some candy to spectators.

Setup time is 9 a.m. and the parade starts at 10 a.m. It begins at First Baptist Church at Broadway and Avenue U, moves east on Broadway to Avenue M, then north on Avenue M to Lubbock Memorial Civic Center parking lot.

Techstyle 2022 fashion show set for Saturday

The Techstyle 2022 Annual Fashion Show, hosted by Texas Tech University’s Apparel Design & Manufacturing program, is scheduled for 5-6:30 p.m. Saturday, at the Museum of Texas Tech, 3301 Fourth St.

The ADM program presents a one-of-a-kind fashion show, with pieces created by senior ADM majors. The show features student collections and juried designs, which a panel of judges deemed worthy of inclusion in the show.

Osher Institute hosts trivia night

The Lubbock chapter of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Texas Tech University will host its second annual Trivia Night fundraiser from 5:30-8:30 p.m. May 10 at the McKenzie Merket Alumni Center. This event is open to the community.

Participants do not have to be an OLLI member to play. Tickets are $30 and include a buffet dinner, drinks (including beer and wine) and the trivia contest.

Six-person teams will compete for the honor of being OLLI Trivia Champions. This event will feature trivia questions in categories including history and current events.

Registrants can purchase a six-person table at $175 for their team or individuals can purchase a single ticket at $30 and be placed on a team.

First-place winners will each receive a $50 Visa gift card, second-place winners will receive a $30 gift card and third-place winners will receive a $20 gift card.

SPC to host Student Awards Assembly

LEVELLAND — South Plains College will recognize more than 100 students at the annual Student Awards Assembly at 7 p.m. on May 11 in the Texan Dome.

There is no admission charge, and the public is invited to attend.

The Student Awards Assembly will feature the winners of academic awards chosen by SPC faculty members; SPC Campus Ambassadors; NASA College Aerospace Scholars; Plains to Bridges Award winners; Rising Star Award winner by the STAR Center; recipients of the James and Glenna Cooper Scholarship Awards; and the winner of the Lena Roetig Award. Also, Sophomore students with Highest Honor and Sophomore students with Honors will be recognized.

New Neighbors Club to meet

New Neighbors Club of Lubbock will hold its last meeting/luncheon of the year on Friday, May 13, at the Lubbock Women's Club, 2020 Broadway.

The meeting will start at 10:30 a.m. and will be the installation of the 2022-23 officers.

Cost for the luncheon is $18 and reservations are required at least three days in advance.

Hazard Mitigation Meeting set for May 19

Lubbock County will hold a public meeting on Thursday, May 19 to gather public input for updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Academy at Main Street and Avenue G in Lubbock. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. There will also be a Microsoft Teams option for those who are unable to attend in-person, but are still interested in getting involved in the process.

The purpose of the public meeting is to provide a project overview from H2O Partners, Inc., consultant to the project, and solicit information from citizens. Public input will help the project team to analyze potential hazards affecting residents and recommend possible actions to reduce their impact. Hazards included are thunderstorm wind, tornado, winter storm, hail, flood, drought, wildfire, dam failure, extreme heat, lightning, and expansive soils.
