Wallace presents 'Shakespeare in Hollywood'

Levelland's Wallace Theater presents "Shakespeare in Hollywood" at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Due to renovations at the Wallace, the production will be held at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts Firehouse, 511 Ave K. in Lubbock.

It's 1934, and Shakespeare's most famous fairies, Oberon and Puck, have magically materialized on the Warner Bros. Hollywood set of Max Reinhardt's "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

Instantly smitten by the glitz and glamour of show biz, the two are ushered onto the silver screen to play (who else?) themselves. With a little help from a feisty flower, blonde bombshells and movie moguls are tossed into loopy love triangles, with raucous results.

Tickets for this production are $40 for general admission; $20 for students, who must bring an ID as proof; and $100 VIP tickets, which include light bites, beverages, and immersion into the production through seating placed in close proximity to the actors.

Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor star in one of the greatest musicals ever filmed. Musician Don Lockwood (Kelly) rises to stardom during Hollywood's silent-movie era — paired with the beautiful, jealous and dumb Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen).

When Lockwood becomes attracted to young studio singer Kathy Selden (Reynolds), Lamont has her fired. But with the introduction of talking pictures, audiences laugh when they hear Lamont speak for the first time — and the studio uses Selden to dub her voice.

Set during the advent of "talkies," this film's classic song-and-dance numbers celebrate the beginning of movie musicals.

Alamo showing 'Ten Commandments' on big screen

For those of us who grew up in the '70s and '80s watching director Cecil B. DeMille's "The Ten Commandments" on TV was an Easter night tradition, but most of us have never seen it on the big screen. So let's tweak that old tradition this year and see this glorious epic in its original VistaVision format, the way it was meant to be appreciated (complete with intermission!).

Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock is hosting "The Ten Commandments" on the big screen at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 16.

With thousands of extras and jaw-dropping special effects far ahead of their time, this is the film people are talking about when they say, "they don't make 'em like that anymore."

The cast alone is astonishing: Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne De Carlo, Debra Paget, John Derek (Bo's future hubby), Vincent Price, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Nina Foch, Martha Scott, John Carradine, and even Charlton Heston's newborn son, Fraser, as the infant Moses. (James Sanford)

Alamo to screen 'Life of Brian'

Regardless of our religious beliefs, most of us know the story of the Messiah, born in a manger to a virgin mother who then grows up to become the savior of all mankind.

This is not that story.

Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock will screen Monty Python's "Life of Brian" at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 19.

This story is about another, relatively unexceptional, occasionally very naughty non-Messiah boy named Brian (Graham Chapman), who is born a few doors down. As a grown man trying to lead a normal life, Brian finds himself in the terribly uncomfortable position of being worshiped as a Messiah.

No matter how hard he tries, he can’t get people to stop believing in him, sending him on a wild series of adventures where he’ll encounter centurions, lepers, space aliens, the Judean People’s Front, Pontius Pilate, the People’s Front of Judea, and, of course, Biggus Dickus.

Tickets to the special screening are $10 and available online in advance at drafthouse.com/lubbock/show/monty-pythons-life-of-brian
