Bacon Brothers to perform at Cactus

The Bacon Brothers (Kevin and Michael) bring their Out of Memory tour to the Cactus Theater at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

Bound by blood and a mutual love of American roots music, The Bacon Brothers have spent the past quarter-century in a creative whirl, funneling their shared DNA into a genre-bending sound. They call that sound "Forosoco" — a blend of folk, rock, soul, and country influences, delivered by two songwriters who were born to collaborate — and it's taken the siblings across the world, from shows in Japan to performances at American landmarks like Carnegie Hall and the Grand Ole Opry.

The Bacon Brothers turn a new page with their eleventh release, Erato, whose five songs showcase the duo at their diverse peak. It's an EP of dynamic contrasts: quiet moments and big payoffs, organic instrumentation and electronic textures, self-penned songs and high-profile collaborations. For Michael and Kevin Bacon, it's also the continuation of a story that began long ago in Philadelphia, where the two siblings were raised on a soundtrack of 1970s singer/songwriters, Philly soul singers, and classic rock bands.

Alamo presents 1954's 'Creature' in 3D

As part of its Third Dimension series, Alamo Drafthouse is screening "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" in 3D at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

In 1954, 3D movies were the talk of Hollywood. Everyone was certain they would single-handedly save cinema, luring families away from their brand-new TVs and back to the theaters for an experience the box in the living room couldn’t hope to match.

Horror films were a natural for 3D, and there were a slew of them released in the early 1950s, including "House of Wax", "The Mad Magician", "Gorilla at Large" and "The Maze". Universal jumped on the bandwagon with "Creature from the Black Lagoon", which makes premium use of the stereoscopic format to regularly take aim at the audience.

The studio, which had ruled the horror movie marketplace in the 1930s and 1940s with its various scary series (Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy, etc.), launched a new franchise with "Creature", which follows a scientific research expedition into the wilds of the Amazon. They discover a gill-man who proceeds to stalk and slay several members of the team, although he develops an attraction to Kay (Julia Adams), a young woman working with the scientists. What follows is one of the all-time spooky tales of horror filmmaking.

Cinemark to screen 'Pitch Perfect' for 10th anniversary

Cinemark Movies 16 and XD, 5721 58th St., is hosting a special screening of "Pitch Perfect" for the film's 10th anniversary.

Show times are 3 and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11; and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14.

The film that started an a capella phenomenon, "Pitch Perfect" is coming back to the Big Screen for the first time in 10 years.

Arriving at her new college, Beca (Anna Kendrick) finds herself not right for any clique but somehow is muscled into one that she never would have picked on her own: alongside mean girls, sweet girls and weird girls whose only thing in common is how good they sound when they sing together.

When Beca leads this a cappella singing group out of their traditional arrangements and perfect harmonies into all-new mash-ups, they fight to climb their way to the top of college music competitions. Tesla coming to Civic Center

Classic 80s hair band Tesla is coming to the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center at 8 p.m. Sept. 13.

Tesla may have been born in the mid-80s eruption of leather, spandex and big hair, but this band has never been about those things. Their soulful sound is strongly embedded in the roots of organic, authentic, 1970s rock — the same roots that produced bands like The Allman Brothers, Grand Funk Railroad, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Aerosmith.

From their iconic hard rock hits, “Modern Day Cowboy” and “Little Suzi” to their Top 20 ballad, “Love Song,” Tesla developed a strong fan base through the 80s and 90s. Their stripped down Five Man Acoustical Jam inspired many major bands to perform similar acoustic storytelling shows and produced one of their most well-known songs, a cover of Five Man Electrical Band’s “Signs.”

Alamo to screen horror classic 'Pet Semetary'

Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock presents the next film in its special Graveyard Shift feature, "Pet Semetary" at 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16.

Mary Lambert's 1989 adaptation of the Stephen King horror-literature classic stars Dale Midkiff as a veterinarian who, after suffering tragedy in his family, dips his toes into supernatural power he does not fully understand.

Alamo marks 30th anniversary of "Godfather: Part III"

Alamo Drafthouse marks the 30th Anniversary of "The Godfather: Part III" with a special screening of director/screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola definitive new edit and restoration of the final film in his epic "Godfather" trilogy – "Mario Puzo's The Godfather, CODA: The Death of Michael Corleone."

The screening is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.

Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), now in his 60s, seeks to free his family from crime and find a suitable successor to his empire. That successor could be fiery Vincent (Andy Garcia), but he may also be the spark that turns Michael's hope of business legitimacy into an inferno of mob violence.

The film’s meticulously restored picture and sound, under the supervision of American Zoetrope and Paramount Pictures, includes a new beginning and ending, as well as changes to scenes, shots, and music cues. The resulting project reflects author Mario Puzo and Coppola’s original intentions of "The Godfather: Part III", and delivers, in the words of Coppola, “a more appropriate conclusion to 'The Godfather' and "The Godfather: Part II.”’

Los Texmaniacs return to Cactus

The historic Cactus Theater welcomes back Los Texmaniacs to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.

Max Baca and Los Texmaniacs are the Past, Present and Future of Conjunto music. Conjunto may be a familiar sound to residents of Texas, but its worldwide appeal can be surprising. Combine a hefty helping of Tex Mex conjunto, simmer with several parts Texas rock, add a daring dash of well-cured blues, and R&B riffs, and you’ve cooked up the tasty Grammy winning Los Texmaniacs groove.

Baca is a legend on the bajo sexto, a 12-string guitar-like instrument, and his nephew, Josh Baca, is fast attaining legendary status on the accordion, with those two instruments creating the core of the lively conjunto sound.

Comedian Kreischer comes to Holly Hall

Comedian Bert Kreischer brings his The Berty Boy Tour Relapse to Buddy Holly Hall at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, in the Helen Devitt Jones Theater.

Kreischer is an American stand-up comedian, actor, writer and host who performs to sold-out crowds across the country. Described as having a “rare and incredible talent” (Interrobang), Bert has evolved from being named Rolling Stone’s 1997 “Number One Partier in the Nation,” to one of the top names in comedy.

Cummings brings Blues to Cactus

Albert Cummings brings his new Blues album "Ten" tour to the Cactus Theater at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18.

From his first album, the burgeoning blues world of the 2000s opened its doors for Cummings. He recorded several albums for Blind Pig Records, and on 2012's "No Regrets" the guitarist extended the boundaries outside the blues world to include country and rock influences like he really hadn't before.

It was obvious that the musician did not want to limit himself in any way, and saw a wider possibility for where his music could go. With its release on Cummings’ own indie label imprint, Ivy Music, "Ten" is a full realization of that possibility.

Gary Morris returns to Cactus

An intimate evening with Gary Morris and his Guitar is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at the Cactus Theater.

Morris is known world-wide for his vocal mastery, able to hold audiences mesmerized and overwhelmed by the pure beauty and inspiration of his voice. His recording career garnered five No. 1 and 16 Top 10 singles, including “Why Lady Why,” “The Love She Found in Me” and “Baby Bye Bye.” Morris’ original rendition of the classic “Wind Beneath My Wings” won both the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music “Song of the Year” awards.

Morris was also named Billboard’s “Male Artist of the Year” early in his career. At the height of his Nashville recording career, the Texas-bred tenor was tapped to play the lead role of Jean Valjean in Broadway’s epic hit “Les Misérables,” to critical acclaim. This role led to a Drama Desk Award nomination. His famous rendition of “Bring Him Home” on the platinum-selling, Grammy Award-winning international cast album resulted in a Command Performance by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

James to perform at Holly Hall

TV sitcom star Kevin James (The King of Queens) and comedian Kevin James will be live on stage in the Helen Devitt Jones Theater of Buddy Holly Hall at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24.

James began his career as a stand-up on the Long Island comedy scene. After being discovered at the 1996 Montreal Comedy Festival, he signed a network development deal to create his own sitcom.

The King of Queens, which premiered in 1998, ran for nine seasons on CBS with James starring and executive producing, and it garnered him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The show concluded its run in 2007 but continues to air daily in syndication across the country and around the world. James also starred in, and executive produced The Crew, a sitcom set in the world of NASCAR and is currently developing a single camera comedy (both for Netflix).

James was the producer, co-writer, and star of the hit comedies "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" 1 & 2, "Zookeeper", and "Here Comes The Boom". James made his feature film debut in Columbia Pictures’ "Hitch" starring opposite Will Smith, and starred alongside Adam Sandler in "Pixels", "Grown Ups", "Grown Ups 2", "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry", and "Hubie Halloween".

'Weird Al' coming to Hub City

"Weird Al" Yankovic and special guest Emo Philips will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Helen Devitt Jones Theater of Buddy Holly Hall.

“Weird Al” Yankovic burst onto the scene over three decades ago and never looked back. For the second time in his storied career, the world’s foremost musical satirist and five-time Grammy winner foregoes his usual high-octane, big-production show for an intimate evening of music, focusing on original (non-parody) songs from his 14-album catalog.

Marking his highly anticipated return to the concert stage after his hugely successful Strings Attached Tour in 2019 where "Weird Al" performed each night alongside a full symphony orchestra, this is a rare opportunity to get up-close and personal with this legendary performer.

Legendary comedian Philips has performed more than 7,000 stand-up comedy shows across the globe, including a two-week theater run in London’s West End.
