Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock is hosting a "The Phantom of the Opera (2004)" movie party at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5.

Take "Batman and Robin" director Joel Schumacher, add in "CATS" scribe Andrew Lloyd Webber, throw in a huge dose of opera (with just a dash of Minnie Driver), and you’ve got yourself some grand campy goodness.

Alamo hosting 'Drafthouse' brunch

A celebration of love, passion, family and life for the ages.

Join Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock for a special brunch showing of "Moonstruck" at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 5.

John Patrick Shanley's tale of perfectly mismatched lovers deservedly won the 1987 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and it's a splendid piece of writing: uproarious yet touching, poignant yet playful.

Cher (who won the Best Actress Oscar) is fiercely funny as Loretta Castorini, a widowed bookkeeper who has given up on waiting for Mr. Right and agreed to marry kind, bland Johnny (Danny Aiello). However, when Loretta meets Johnny's wild-hearted brother, Ronny (the volcanic/vulnerable Nicolas Cage), her dull life suddenly spirals out of control and she is transformed from frumpy to ravishing.

Cinemark to screen Pearl biopic

Cinemark Movies 16 and XD, 5721 58th St., is hosting a screening of the biopic "Facing the Laughter: Minnie Pearl" at 4 and 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6.

"Facing the Laughter: Minnie Pearl" is a full-length documentary about the life and work of Sarah Cannon, aka Minnie Pearl.

Sarah was a serious, educated woman who had once dreamed of becoming a Shakespearean actress, but she found fame playing a simple country girl who often made herself the butt of her jokes. Instantly identifiable – even in silhouette – by her straw hat with a price tag dangling from its brim, Minnie Pearl became an icon of country music radio, stage and TV.

When she greeted audiences, they enthusiastically echoed her signature “Howdee” in a happy roar. While Sarah and Minnie were two sides of a coin, they share a legacy of compassion, empowerment and humor.

Alamo hosts Black History Month screening of 'Boyz'

Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock is honoring Black History Month with a screening of films showcasing black excellence.This month, they present a selection of works starring or produced by black creatives. Dramatic, stirring, poignant, funny – an essential selection of titles that cover a breadth of experience and entertainment.

The first film is "Boyz n the Hood" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7.

John Singleton was barely 23 when he wrote and directed "Boyz n the Hood", a searing portrait of teen life in South Central Los Angeles. "This ain't no fairy tale," promised the movie's ad campaign; in fact, the subject matter was drawn from Singleton's own observations and experiences.

"Boyz" is built around Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a smart, ambitious teenager who ricochets between two worlds: he hangs with gang member friends like Doughboy (Ice Cube) and sees the brutal justice and casual violence of the streets, yet he also works at a clothing store in the mall and has hopes of getting into college.

Lubbock Chorale hosts annual gala

The Lubbock Chorale will host its annual gala "If Music Be the Food of Love" at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Frazier Alumni Pavilion on the Texas Tech campus.

For millennia, music has been used to describe the deep feelings of love. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, The Lubbock Chorale will invite the Lubbock community to feel that love.

With David Dickau’s setting of the poem “If Music Be the Food of Love” as a centerpiece, the choir and soloists will present music of love through arts songs, opera arias, and choral compositions from some of the greatest composers of all time.

This concert will include an elegant dinner. Seating will be at tables of eight.

Lubbock Legends to perform at Holly Hall

The stars of West Texas are aligning for an evening showcase of songs, stories with Texas Tech Alumni “Lubbock Legends” Josh Abbott, Pat Green, & William Clark Green, presented by The Matador Club.

The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, in the Helen Devitt Jones Theater of Buddy Holly Hall.

CATS Playhouse presents 'Nunsense'

CATS Playhouse, 2257 34th St., presents its first show of the 2023 season.

The group presents "Nunsense" Feb. 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25. The theater opens at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.

"Nunsense"​ is the hilarious musical farce about a convent of Nuns staging a fundraiser to enable them to bury the last four nuns of their order who died of botulism in an unfortunate convent cooking accident (and who are temporarily being stored in the freezer!).

LCT presents 'The Cake'

Directed by Marla Maresca, "The Cake" tells the story of Della who makes cakes, not judgment calls – those she leaves to her husband, Tim. But when the girl she helped raise comes back home to North Carolina to get married, and the fiancé is actually a fiancée, Della’s life gets turned upside down.

She can’t really make a cake for such a wedding, can she? For the first time in her life, Della has to think for herself.

Johnny Lee to present pre-Valentine's concert

Johnny Lee will perform his Lookin' For Love pre-Valentine's Day show at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at the Cactus Theater.

Lee’s breakthrough hit, “Lookin’ for Love” helped usher in a historic era in country music - and four decades later, he remains one of the genre’s most beloved entertainers.

Possessing enviable comedic skills and a voice as warm and strong as sunshine on the Texas asphalt, Lee has enjoyed a successful career, but he isn’t ready to call it quits yet. The proof is in his new album "Everything’s Gonna Be Alright". The 14-song collection looks poised to be a landmark album in an already impressive career, spotlighting not only Lee’s signature vocals but also his talent as a songwriter. 'Simon & Garfunkel Story' comes to Holly Hall

Sounds of West Texas to perform classic love songs

The Sounds of West Texas Concert Series will be presenting, “A Night of Classic Love Songs” beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Cactus Theater.

These talented local artists will be performing great nostalgic tunes from various decades and genres that will include some of the best songs ever written. This is a show for the whole family and could also be a great night for a post-Valentine's Day date with your sweetheart.

Some things that make all of the Sounds of West Texas shows unique is that some of the artists perform jingles on the show that helps advertise for a few of the sponsors and door prizes (that are donated by some local businesses), are given away to some lucky audience members. The jingles and door prizes add and element of fun for the audience.

The fun-loving and hilarious Kurt Kiser will be the emcee for the evening, and there is a rumor that the very delectable (or perhaps, unpredictable).

LSO hosting European symphony

The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra hosts the first European symphony to visit Lubbock on its international tour.Lubbock Symphony Presents: Filharmonie Brno at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, at The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences.

Filharmonie Brno is based in the city of Brno in the Czech Republic, with the roots of this philharmonic going back to the 1870s. This concert will highlight celebrated Czech composers, including Dvořák, and feature a banda ensemble of Lubbock Symphony brass musicians in Janáček’s “Sinfonietta.

Micky and the Motorcars make Cactus debut

Micky and the Motorcars will make their debut at the Cactus Theater at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 10.

For a handful of summers about 30 years ago, tourists who wandered into a large dancehall in Stanley, Idaho, witnessed a family tradition finding new life. Young and old sat shoulder-to-shoulder, taking a break from the town’s mountain hikes and river campgrounds to take in Muzzie Braun and the Boys –– a local family band who’d made it to the Grand Ole Opry, effortlessly spouted cowboy poetry and Western swing at gatherings around the country, and featured Muzzie’s four young sons –– precocious boys with rock 'n' roll futures.

Big brothers Cody and Willy started Reckless Kelly, and Micky and Gary left Idaho for Austin and started Micky and the Motorcars, a road-dogging favorite whose nonstop tour for the last 17 years has defined not just the lives of the brothers, but also shaped Austin’s roots-rock resurgence that has played out over the last two decades.

Rod Stewart tribute coming to Cactus

Comedy tour coming to Cactus

William Lee Martin brings his Comedy Stampede tour to the Cactus Theater at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 18.

Martin is a story-telling, stand-up comedian who wants to make you laugh after a long day. He’s a regular at the Grand Ole Opry and the MGM in Las Vegas and has been touring since 1996.

“The Texas Original” sells out venues around the country. He has three, one-hour comedy television specials including “Standing in the Middle” and “The Nutcracker: A Christmas Special Based On His Vasectomy” which are currently streaming on Amazon Prime, Apple TV and the Comedy Dynamics Network. During the 2020 pandemic, his following on social media exploded with his positive and upbeat “4 o’clock Daily Talk” on Facebook and other platforms.

He works relatively clean but disarmingly clever (although it may not be suitable for younger audiences). He resonates with people because he looks, talks and acts like a huge demographic of this country - without having an agenda, being negative or complaining about things. Family and friends still affectionately call him by his nickname, “Cowboy Bill.”

Legendary Diamond Rio to perform at Cactus

Legendary country hitmakers Diamond Rio will be live at the Cactus Theater at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 16.

Formed in 1989 in Nashville, Tennessee, the band consists of Gene Johnson (mandolin, tenor vocals), Jimmy Olander (lead guitar, acoustic guitar, banjo), Brian Prout (drums), Marty Roe (lead vocal), Dan Truman (keyboards), and Dana Williams (bass guitar, baritone vocals).

Diamond Rio’s most recent release "I Made It", is their 10th studio album. The title track was co-written by the band’s lead guitarist Jimmy Olander and features 11 new songs. Produced by Olander and Mike Clute, I Made It is available on iTunes and www.diamondrio.com
