Auditions announced for 'Taming of the Shrew'
Open auditions have been scheduled by The Edge for its first production of the 2022 season, William Shakespeare’s "The Taming of the Shrew" on Jan. 16 from 3-7 p.m. and Jan. 17 from 7-10 p.m.
A second round of auditions are scheduled for Jan. 22-23 from 3-7 p.m. with callbacks slated for Jan. 24 from 7-10 p.m.
All auditions and rehearsals will be held at the Boston Avenue Playhouse, 4228 Boston Ave. in Lubbock.
The show will be directed by K. Douglas McKennon and rehearsals will begin Jan. 31. Production dates are March 24-27 and March 31-April 3.
Casting will be age, race, and gender blind. There are 27 roles available for men and women of all ages and none have been pre-cast. Some actors may play multiple roles.
"The Taming of the Shrew" is Shakespeare's classic comedy about relationships and marriage. The Edge will explore how those concepts reflect in today's society and social norms.
Auditions will consist of prepared monologues as well as readings from the script. Actors should bring a resume and be prepared to move.
Those cast will receive a modest stipend for their work.
Exhibit on display at Buddy Holly Center gallery
Home: A Search for Place, featuring the art of Melinda Green Harvey, photography; Valerie Komkov Hill, painting and fiber; and Pat Maines, mixed media, is on display at the Buddy Holly Center Fine Arts Gallery through Jan. 16.
The Buddy Holly Center Fine Arts Gallery is located at 1801 Crickets Ave.
Three artists, who are also friends, combine their work in an exhibit that reflects on the evocative word — home.
Many of the pieces on display have extensive narrative that should allow you an opportunity to see what each artist had in mind when constructing the piece.
The center's hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
Alamo hosting free memorial screening of 'Lake Placid'
Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock, 120 W. Loop 289, is hosting a free memorial screening of "Lake Placid" on what would have been Betty White's 100th birthday. Celebrate the passing of a true talent by watching one of her funniest films on the big screen. The show is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17.

Boland album release party set for Jan. 22
Jason Boland's "The Light Saw Me," album release show at the Cactus Theater has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22.
For the past 20 years, Jason Boland & the Stragglers have dazzled audiences all over as one of the leading ambassadors of the Oklahoma and Texas music movement. LSO to present 'Mosaic'

The Edge to offer lighting design classes
Conventional lighting design classes will be offered by The Edge Theatre Company beginning Jan 22.
Class instructor will be Ginger Angstadt, who is a TTU grad with her Ph.D. in fine arts theatre. She has been a lighting designer since 1980 with the Delaware, Pennsylvania , DC, and TTU dance communities and as freelance lighting designer with local theater groups in Delaware and Texas.
The company seeks to involve students from ages 12 to young adults in acquiring a sense of equipment repair, knowledge of hang and focus, color and its role in design, and a review of power and control systems with the assistance of Dr: James Bush.
Educational programming at The Edge seeks to develop and serve diverse populations. They are partnering with The Y, Ted Thea Boys & Girls Club, Tomorrow’s Leaders & other youth groups to work on this opportunity for youth.
Classes will run from 1-3 p.m. on Saturdays through March 26. The cost is $10 per class. Students also may purchase a 10-class punch card for $100 applied toward any qualifying class offered by The Edge.

Texas Hill Country to perform at Cactus
Texas Hill Country, made up of Casey James, Craig Wayne Boyd and Adam Wakefield, along with Jeff McCreight and Southern Conviction are scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Cactus Theater.
Texas Hill is a gritty amalgam of overlapping tastes and distinct voices that meet in the middle as a bold harmonic trio. Boyd offers a voice full of gospel-tinged country smoke, Wakefield blends a rootsy bluegrass-and-Americana rasp, and James wraps it with a blue-eyed soul quality and deft blues guitar chops.
Lubbock’s own Southern Conviction, led by Cactus favorite Jeff McCreight, will open the show.

LCT presents 'The 39 Steps'
Lubbock Community Theatre will stage "The 39 Steps" on Jan. 28-30 and Feb. 4-6 with Friday and Saturday evening performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. at 3101 35th St.
Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have "The 39 Steps." The show centers on the character Richard Hannay, who is on the run from authorities, as well as the all-but-unknown organization, The 39 Steps. The journey to unveiling this organization leads him to an array of different characters who don’t always have the best of intentions.
This two-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, over 150 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of four), an onstage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and some good old-fashioned romance.

Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock, 120 W. Loop 289, is hosting a special screening of "Groundhog Day" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1.
At first, Harold Ramis’ "Groundhog Day" seems like a typical Bill Murray comedy, with the iconic leading man standing one step away from the rest of humanity, always quick with an ironic insult. But the film cleverly turns Murray’s sarcastic outsider persona against him, and the film evolves into a sweet fable about humanity.
Murray plays Phil Connors, an egotistical Pittsburgh weatherman who hates nothing more than Groundhog Day. He detests covering the annual festival in nearby Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and he especially despises sharing his name with the town’s celebrated rodent. Phil hopes to get in and out of the small town as soon as possible, but a blizzard strands him overnight and Phil wakes up to find out there is no next day. It’s still Feb. 2.
Outside, the people of Punxsutawney are celebrating Groundhog Day as if the previous 24 hours never happened and Phil is the only one caught in a feeling of deja vu gone wild.

Overstreet brings 'Storyteller' event to Cactus
Legendary singer and songwriter Paul Overstreet brings his "Storyteller" event to the Cactus Theater at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6.
As a songwriter, Overstreet has written and co-written 27 Top Ten songs, his first being the George Jones single “Same Ole Me.” Numerous other artists have recorded his songs including Randy Travis, Tanya Tucker, Keith Whitley, Alison Krauss, The Judds, Kenny Chesney, Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood and more.
Overstreet's first solo project began when RCA released "Sowin' Love". With a legendary career spanning nearly five decades, Kansas has firmly established itself as one of America’s iconic classic rock bands. This “garage band” from Topeka have gone on to sell more than 30 million albums worldwide.

The Mavericks to perform at Holly Hall
The Mavericks en Espanol World Tour comes to the Helen Devitt Jones Theater of Buddy Holly Hall at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13.
The Mavericks, the eclectic rock and country group known for crisscrossing musical boundaries with abandon, has gone through three distinct phases since it was founded in Miami in 1989. Now, The Mavericks have ushered in the fourth phase of their evolution with the No. 1 Billboard debut of their first-ever, all Spanish album, "En Español", released on the band’s own Mono Mundo label.
The songs are as diverse as Latin America itself, and as cohesive as the ideal of the American melting pot.
