Alamo hosting special screening of 'Groundhog Day'

Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock, 120 W. Loop 289, is hosting a special screening of "Groundhog Day" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1.

At first, Harold Ramis’ "Groundhog Day" seems like a typical Bill Murray comedy, with the iconic leading man standing one step away from the rest of humanity, always quick with an ironic insult. But the film cleverly turns Murray’s sarcastic outsider persona against him, and the film evolves into a sweet fable about humanity.

Murray plays Phil Connors, an egotistical Pittsburgh weatherman who hates nothing more than Groundhog Day. He detests covering the annual festival in nearby Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and he especially despises sharing his name with the town’s celebrated rodent. Phil hopes to get in and out of the small town as soon as possible, but a blizzard strands him overnight and Phil wakes up to find out there is no next day. It’s still Feb. 2.

Outside, the people of Punxsutawney are celebrating Groundhog Day as if the previous 24 hours never happened and Phil is the only one caught in a feeling of deja vu gone wild.

Tickets for this special screening are $10 each and available in advance online at drafthouse.com/lubbock/show/groundhog-day

Order from our brunch menu – egg BLT, French toast, or breakfast tacos – and pair with a brunch cocktail classic. Each are available to order along with our full menu at this special brunch screening.

As far as we’re concerned, "Pretty in Pink" is the definitive guide to the classification of high school boys. Sure, fashion and hairstyles have changed, but the universal truth of the film remains: if you're a teenage dude, you're either a Duckie or a Blane.

The Duckies of the world are typically adorable and goofy, but they're just never gonna make it out of the friend zone. The Blanes, on the other hand, were born to be hot and popular, so of course they take everything for granted and don't appreciate the awesome, amazing girls right in front of them. In other words, dating in high school sucks.

Fortunately, "Pretty in Pink" channels that suckage through Molly Ringwald, light of our lives, and wraps it all up in a fabulous '80s package.

Movie tickets for this show are $10 and available in advance online at drafthouse.com/lubbock

The Mavericks to perform at Holly Hall

The Mavericks en Espanol World Tour comes to the Helen Devitt Jones Theater of Buddy Holly Hall at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13.

The Mavericks, the eclectic rock and country group known for crisscrossing musical boundaries with abandon, has gone through three distinct phases since it was founded in Miami in 1989. Now, The Mavericks have ushered in the fourth phase of their evolution with the No. 1 Billboard debut of their first-ever, all Spanish album, "En Español", released on the band’s own Mono Mundo label.

The songs are as diverse as Latin America itself, and as cohesive as the ideal of the American melting pot. To season this rich musical paella, The Mavericks add their signature country/rock/Tex-Mex flavors and a refreshing spontaneity to the mix. En Español flips the band’s usual fusion formula, which adds a striking assortment of genres – salsa, ska, norteño, mariachi, and much more – to its sturdy rock/country base.
