Alamo to feature series of Carpenter films

Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock is hosting the Summer of Darkness, a retrospective on one of the greatest movie masters of horror, John Carpenter.

His oft-bleak, wry, and impeccably crafted pop gems ran through an increasingly conservative 1980s, leaving a trail of cinematic carnage in its wake. This year, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Alamo will celebrate some of his finest in grand fashion. Join us for Summer of Darkness and receive a free custom-designed letterpress poster, while supplies last.

First up is the 1978 horror flick, "Halloween." It might not have resembled the “sophisticated” horror films of the 1970s, but the simplicity of the film’s story and production values allowed Carpenter to focus on staying one step ahead of the audience.

From Dean Cundey's flowing, blue-hued photography to Carpenter's minimalist score to the blank, ominous mask of Michael Myers, nothing in this moody, terrifying film is misplaced.

The classic movie will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7. Tickets are available in advance online at drafthouse.com/lubbock/show/halloween-1978
