Movies 16 to screen The Met's 'Cinderella'

Movies 16 Lubbock, 5721 58th St., is hosting a special big-screen showing of The Met: Live in HD "Cinderella" at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5.

Laurent Pelly’s storybook staging of Massenet’s Cendrillon is presented with an all-new English translation in an abridged 90-minute adaptation, with mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as its rags-to-riches princess.

Maestro Emmanuel Villaume leads a delightful cast, which includes mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo as Cinderella’s Prince Charming, soprano Jessica Pratt as her Fairy Godmother, and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe and bass-baritone Laurent Naouri as her feuding guardians.

Carrington to perform at Holly Hall

Rodney Carrington is scheduled to bring his "Let Me In!" tour to the Helen Devitt Jones Theater in Buddy Holly Hall at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7.

Triple threat Carrington is a multi-talented comedian, actor, singer and writer playing sold-out shows around the world as one of the top 10 highest-grossing touring comedians for the past two decades.

He broke through with his major label comedy CD debut “Hangin’ With Rodney” in 1998. The next few years saw nine more Top 10 comedy albums, all of which continue to receive radio airplay and regularly place on the national comedy charts.

A platinum-recording artist, he's recorded eight major record label comedy albums, followed by three albums on his own record label, Laughter’s Good Records. His last album “Here Comes the Truth” (released 2017) climbed to #3 on the comedy charts, accruing tens of millions of streams on Spotify and even spawned a Netflix special.

Cactus hosting tribute to 70s greats

A Tribute to ABBA, Fleetwood Mac and Queen, presented by Caldwell Entertainment, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave.

When you research the iconic music of the '70s, no doubt these three groups pop up at the top of the list.

A Tribute to ABBA, Fleetwood Mac and Queen will feature cutting-edge vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Devin Collins, Cactus star Brandon Gwinn, the incomparable Sheena Fadeyi and her spitfire sidekicks Kassidy King and Lynnli Wiseman, all backed by the most versatile band in the Southwest, the Caldwell Collective.

'Officer and Gentleman' musical comes to Holly Hall

"An Officer and a Gentleman: The Musical" is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11 and Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Helen Devitt Jones Theater in Buddy Holly Hall.

Based on the Oscar-winning film starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger, "An Officer and a Gentleman" is a breathtaking production that celebrates triumph over adversity and includes one of the most iconic and romantic endings ever portrayed on screen. Featuring the Grammy Award® winning, No. 1 hit single "Up Where We Belong", and a score based on the 1980’s catalogue of music that gave voice to a generation, the live stage production is a new adaptation by multiple Tony Awards® nominee Dick Scanlan (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Everyday Rapture), based on the original screenplay by Douglas Day Stewart. The musical is directed by Scanlan with choreography by Patricia Wilcox (Motown, A Night with Janis Joplin).

Kingston Trio coming to Cactus

The Kingston Trio is scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at the Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave.

Fans of legendary folk icons The Kingston Trio can re-discover their timeless music all over again. In celebration of 60-plus years of music, the iconic folk group performs their best-loved songs as part of the "Keep The Music Playing" national tour.

All three current members, Mike Marvin, Tim Gorelangton and Don Marovich, have intrinsic links to the original group: Mike is the “adopted son” of founding member Nick Reynolds, who was also his musical mentor; Tim, a friend of John Stewart since he was in his early twenties, is one of the few musicians outside the Trio who has recorded with Nick Reynolds; and Don Marovich, a highly regarded musician who has also toured with the original Trio.

The Kingston Trio was one of the most prominent groups of the era's pop-folk boom that started in 1958 with the release of their first album and its hit recording of "Tom Dooley", which sold over three million copies as a single.

Remembering Elvis show comes to Cactus

Remembering the King: The Sun Years to Elvis Presley Boulevard, starring Moses Snow and Doug Church, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Cactus Theater.

This show will feature two of the top Elvis tribute artists in the country: incredible 18-year-old dynamo Moses Snow as "young Elvis" and multi-award-winning Doug Church — known as "The True Voice of Elvis" — performing as "Vegas Elvis", both backed by the Caldwell Collective band.

Exhibit on display at Buddy Holly Center gallery

Home: A Search for Place, featuring the art of Melinda Green Harvey, photography; Valerie Komkov Hill, painting and fiber; and Pat Maines, mixed media, is on display at the Buddy Holly Center Fine Arts Gallery through Jan. 16.

The Buddy Holly Center Fine Arts Gallery is located at 1801 Crickets Ave.

Three artists, who are also friends, combine their work in an exhibit that reflects on the evocative word — home.

Many of the pieces on display have extensive narrative that should allow you an opportunity to see what each artist had in mind when constructing the piece.

The center's hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

Boland album release party set for Jan. 22

Jason Boland's "The Light Saw Me," album release show at the Cactus Theater has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22.

LSO to present 'Mosaic'

The Edge to offer lighting design classes

Conventional lighting design classes will be offered by The Edge Theatre Company beginning Jan 22.

Class instructor will be Ginger Angstadt, who is a TTU grad with her Ph.D. in fine arts theatre. She has been a lighting designer since 1980 with the Delaware, Pennsylvania , DC, and TTU dance communities and as freelance lighting designer with local theater groups in Delaware and Texas.

The company seeks to involve students from ages 12 to young adults in acquiring a sense of equipment repair, knowledge of hang and focus, color and its role in design, and a review of power and control systems with the assistance of Dr: James Bush.

Educational programming at The Edge seeks to develop and serve diverse populations. They are partnering with The Y, Ted Thea Boys & Girls Club, Tomorrow’s Leaders & other youth groups to work on this opportunity for youth.

Classes will run from 1-3 p.m. on Saturdays through March 26. The cost is $10 per class. Students also may purchase a 10-class punch card for $100 applied toward any qualifying class offered by The Edge.

Classes will take place at The Boston Avenue Playhouse, home of The Edge, 4228 Boston Ave. in Lubbock.

'Casablanca' marks 80th anniversary

Celebrate the 80th anniversary of "Casablanca" with Turner Classic Movies.

Movies 16 Lubbock, 5721 58th St., will host a special showing of the classic movie at 4:30 and 7:30 Thursday, Jan. 23, and 4 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26.

Academy Award® winners Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman light up the screen in one of the most enduring romances in movie history.

Rick Blaine owns a nightclub in Vichy-controlled Casablanca, frequented by refugees desperate to escape German domination. Actor, comedian to perform at Holly Hall

Actor, comedian, and writer Tom Segura brings his "I'm Coming Everywhere" World Tour to the Helen Devitt Jones Theater at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Segura is one of the biggest names in the comedy business. He recently performed to sold-out audiences at his 100 + city, Take it Down Tour.

Tom Segura is known best for his Netflix specials, "Ball Hog" (2020), "Disgraceful" (2018), "Mostly Stories" (2021) and "Completely Normal" (2014).
