Alamo brings 'The Godfather' back to big screen

Alamo Drafthouse returns "The Godfather" to the big screen for a special screening at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3.

An undisputed classic and still one of the most beloved, acclaimed, and popular films of all time, "The Godfather" feels just as fresh and groundbreaking today as it did in 1972. It made Al Pacino a star, it cemented Marlon Brando as the acting force of a generation, and it shed light on the unique and overflowing talent of director Francis Ford Coppola.

Over the years the film is mostly known in pop culture for Brando's puffy cheeks, the immense bloodshed throughout, and that infamous horse's head. What shouldn't be forgotten, though, is that Coppola and writer Mario Puzo crafted one of the most emotional and complex studies of family, loyalty, and morality ever put to film.

Tickets for this special screening are $10 and available in advance online at drafthouse.com/lubbock/

Rink discovers oil on a small plot of land, and while he uses his vast, new wealth to buy all the land surrounding the Benedict ranch, the Benedicts’ disagreement over prejudice fuels conflict that runs across generations.

Tickets for this special screening are $10 each and available online at drafthouse.com/lubbock/show/giant

KoRn, Evanescence to perform for FMX Birthday Bash

The 41st FMX Birthday Bash presents KoRn and Evanescence, with special guests Palaye Royale and Dana Dentata on Sept. 7 at United Supermarkets Arena.

In their 14 years of togetherness, the L.A.-based KoRn has both survived and thrived, and the songs on their records are rife with detritus of decadence and lessons learned.

On the 2007 Family Values Tour, the band serves up its biggest stage show ever, and in the set list are songs they haven't performed in 10 years.

Korn, who have sold more than 25 million records worldwide and earned six Grammy nods and two wins to date, have upped the ante with each successive record and project, always innovators in the use of media, fan interaction, collaborations, business models, and most importantly, music.

Evanescence is an American rock band founded in Little Rock in 1995 by singer, pianist, and keyboardist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody. After recording independent albums, the band released their first full-length album, "Fallen", on Wind-up Records in 2003.

On the strength of hit singles "Bring Me to Life" and "My Immortal", "Fallen" sold more than 17 million copies worldwide and helped the band win two Grammy Awards out of six nominations.

Tickets range from $39 to $384 (plus taxes and fees), depending on seating and with VIP packages available.

Nunn to perform at Cactus

Brownfield native Gary P. Nunn is scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Cactus Theater.

As a founding father of the progressive country music scene in Austin in the 1970s, Nunn helped change the face of popular music. With a career spanning half a century – and no plans for stopping anytime soon - Nunn is a proud ambassador for the state of Texas, singing about his love of everything Texas in dance halls around the state and on concert stages around the world. His gifts as a prolific songwriter and performer have established Nunn as an icon of Lone Star music and earned him the respect of his peers and the admiration of countless country music fans worldwide.

Nunn’s signature Texas country song, “London Homesick Blues,” was a breakout hit on Jerry Jeff Walker’s landmark ¡Viva Terlingua! album, selling over one million copies, became an anthem for the state of Texas with its internationally known “I wanna go home with the Armadillo” chorus, and was the theme for the PBS concert TV show “Austin City Limits” for nearly three decades.

Nunn's latest CD, "Friends For Life", is a collection of duets featuring new versions of 12 of his songs by an all-star lineup by some of Texas’ most loved artists including Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Cody Johnson, Kevin Fowler, Bruce Robison, Wade Bowen, Cory Morrow, Cody Canada, Roger Creager, Kimmie Rhodes, Dale Watson, Sunny Sweeney and Red Steagall.

Alamo to screen 3D version of 'Friday the 13th III'

As part of its Third Dimension series, Alamo Drafthouse is screening "Friday the 13th III" in 3D at 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen someone smoke a joint in 3D. Building on the genre-defining style of "Friday the 13th Part II", this is the crown jewel of the 1980s 3D revival — and also an exceptionally stoned party slasher.

In this chapter, Jason Voorhees dons his iconic hockey mask for the first time and continues to unleash gory chaos on the grounds of Camp Crystal Lake. Co-written by Carol Watson and directed by Steve Miner ("Halloween H2O"), "Friday the 13th Part III" returns to the big screen for the first time in decades with a gorgeous new 3D restoration.

Tickets for this special screening are $13.75 and available online in advance at drafthouse.com/lubbock/

Alamo presents 'Holy Grail' movie party

Greetings old women, it is I, Arthur, your king!

Join Alamo Drafthouse for a special movie party screening of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.

That's right, one of the greatest and most quotable movies of all time is getting the Movie Party treatment, which means you can get in on all the sword-fighting, coconut-clomping glory.

We'll have swords for everyone, coconut halves for you to bring your imaginary horses to life, onscreen lyrics so that you can sing-along with the Knights of the Round Table, and a test of will, dexterity, and might prior to the show to recruit some brave knights to our cause (don't go second-guessing your favorite colors, now).

So follow, but follow only if ye be men of valor. For the entrance to this Movie Party is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel, that no man yet has fought with it and lived. Bones of full fifty men lie strewn about its lair. So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth.

Tickets for this special movie party are $15.15 and available in advance online at drafthouse.com/lubbock/

Alamo returns 'The Godfather II' to big screen

Alamo Drafthouse returns "The Godfather II" to the big screen for a special screening at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.

A completely different film from its predecessor in terms of narrative structure and tone, "The Godfather: Part II" fulfills the cliché of being a sequel that delivers and, in some ways, surpasses the original. Following the drama surrounding the Corleone family at the end of the first film, Part II takes two decidedly unexpected detours: one into history, the other into politics.

In the present much of the film’s focus is on the FBI investigation of the mob in New York, predominantly the sects lead by Michael Corleone (Al Pacino). In the past the film tells the story of a young Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) establishing his influence in New York and working towards bloody revenge.

These time-framing devices make the film’s 3-plus hour runtime fly by as the Vito story gives deep emotional context and resonance not only to this film, but to "The Godfather" as well. Coppola parallels the life and transformation of Michael Corleone to that of his father masterfully, providing deeper insight and understanding of his descent into his father’s criminal empire.

Tickets for this special screening are $10 and available online in advance at drafthouse.com/lubbock/

Bacon Brothers to perform at Cactus

The Bacon Brothers (Kevin and Michael) bring their Out of Memory tour to the Cactus Theater at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

Bound by blood and a mutual love of American roots music, The Bacon Brothers have spent the past quarter-century in a creative whirl, funneling their shared DNA into a genre-bending sound. They call that sound "Forosoco" — a blend of folk, rock, soul, and country influences, delivered by two songwriters who were born to collaborate — and it's taken the siblings across the world, from shows in Japan to performances at American landmarks like Carnegie Hall and the Grand Ole Opry.

The Bacon Brothers turn a new page with their eleventh release, Erato, whose five songs showcase the duo at their diverse peak. It's an EP of dynamic contrasts: quiet moments and big payoffs, organic instrumentation and electronic textures, self-penned songs and high-profile collaborations. For Michael and Kevin Bacon, it's also the continuation of a story that began long ago in Philadelphia, where the two siblings were raised on a soundtrack of 1970s singer/songwriters, Philly soul singers, and classic rock bands.

Special guest opener is Cindy Alexander.

Tickets for this show are: Reserved, floor, Rows A-E), $59; remaining floor, (Rows F-M), $49; standard balcony, $39; and balcony box (includes concessions), $99.

Alamo presents 1954's 'Creature' in 3D

As part of its Third Dimension series, Alamo Drafthouse is screening "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" in 3D at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

In 1954, 3D movies were the talk of Hollywood. Everyone was certain they would single-handedly save cinema, luring families away from their brand-new TVs and back to the theaters for an experience the box in the living room couldn’t hope to match.

Horror films were a natural for 3D, and there were a slew of them released in the early 1950s, including "House of Wax", "The Mad Magician", "Gorilla at Large" and "The Maze". Universal jumped on the bandwagon with "Creature from the Black Lagoon", which makes premium use of the stereoscopic format to regularly take aim at the audience.

The studio, which had ruled the horror movie marketplace in the 1930s and 1940s with its various scary series (Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy, etc.), launched a new franchise with "Creature", which follows a scientific research expedition into the wilds of the Amazon. They discover a gill-man who proceeds to stalk and slay several members of the team, although he develops an attraction to Kay (Julia Adams), a young woman working with the scientists. What follows is one of the all-time spooky tales of horror filmmaking.

Tickets for this special screening are $11 and available in advance online at drafthouse.com/lubbock/

Cinemark to screen 'Pitch Perfect' for 10th anniversary

Cinemark Movies 16 and XD, 5721 58th St., is hosting a special screening of "Pitch Perfect" for the film's 10th anniversary.

Show times are 3 and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11; and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14.

The film that started an a capella phenomenon, "Pitch Perfect" is coming back to the Big Screen for the first time in 10 years.

Arriving at her new college, Beca (Anna Kendrick) finds herself not right for any clique but somehow is muscled into one that she never would have picked on her own: alongside mean girls, sweet girls and weird girls whose only thing in common is how good they sound when they sing together.

When Beca leads this a cappella singing group out of their traditional arrangements and perfect harmonies into all-new mash-ups, they fight to climb their way to the top of college music competitions. Pitch Perfect is an outrageously hilarious laugh-out-loud comedy that also stars Anna Camp (The Help), Brittany Snow (Hairspray) and Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids).

Tickets for this special screening are $12.45 online in advance and available at www.fathomevents.com

Tesla coming to Civic Center

Classic 80s hair band Tesla is coming to the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center at 8 p.m. Sept. 13.

Tesla may have been born in the mid-80s eruption of leather, spandex and big hair, but this band has never been about those things. Their soulful sound is strongly embedded in the roots of organic, authentic, 1970s rock — the same roots that produced bands like The Allman Brothers, Grand Funk Railroad, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Aerosmith.

From their iconic hard rock hits, “Modern Day Cowboy” and “Little Suzi” to their Top 20 ballad, “Love Song,” Tesla developed a strong fan base through the 80s and 90s. Their stripped down Five Man Acoustical Jam inspired many major bands to perform similar acoustic storytelling shows and produced one of their most well-known songs, a cover of Five Man Electrical Band’s “Signs.”

Tesla has continued to release new original music and sell out venues all over the world, giving audiences exactly what is expected — unpretentious, straightforward, bluesy rock and roll.

Tickets for this show range from $43 to $69 (plus taxes and fees). For more information or to purchase tickets, visit selectaseatlubbock.com

Alamo to screen horror classic 'Pet Semetary'

Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock presents the next film in its special Graveyard Shift feature, "Pet Semetary" at 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16.

Mary Lambert's 1989 adaptation of the Stephen King horror-literature classic stars Dale Midkiff as a veterinarian who, after suffering tragedy in his family, dips his toes into supernatural power he does not fully understand.

Creepy kids, creepier animals and Fred Gwynne sporting a beyond-memorable Maine accent - "Pet Semetary" is responsible for unleashing waves of nightmare fuel upon an unsuspecting generation of horror hounds. Just a mention of “Zelda” sends a shiver down the spine of those in the know.

Don’t miss a chance to see this still spooky creepfest on the big screen via a 4K digital restoration.

Alamo marks 30th anniversary of "Godfather: Part III"

Alamo Drafthouse marks the 30th Anniversary of "The Godfather: Part III" with a special screening of director/screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola definitive new edit and restoration of the final film in his epic "Godfather" trilogy – "Mario Puzo's The Godfather, CODA: The Death of Michael Corleone."

The screening is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.

Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), now in his 60s, seeks to free his family from crime and find a suitable successor to his empire. That successor could be fiery Vincent (Andy Garcia), but he may also be the spark that turns Michael's hope of business legitimacy into an inferno of mob violence.

The film’s meticulously restored picture and sound, under the supervision of American Zoetrope and Paramount Pictures, includes a new beginning and ending, as well as changes to scenes, shots, and music cues. The resulting project reflects author Mario Puzo and Coppola’s original intentions of "The Godfather: Part III", and delivers, in the words of Coppola, “a more appropriate conclusion to 'The Godfather' and "The Godfather: Part II.”’

Tickets for this special screening are $10 and available online in advance at drafthouse.com/lubbock/

Los Texmaniacs return to Cactus

The historic Cactus Theater welcomes back Los Texmaniacs to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.

Max Baca and Los Texmaniacs are the Past, Present and Future of Conjunto music. Conjunto may be a familiar sound to residents of Texas, but its worldwide appeal can be surprising. Combine a hefty helping of Tex Mex conjunto, simmer with several parts Texas rock, add a daring dash of well-cured blues, and R&B riffs, and you’ve cooked up the tasty Grammy winning Los Texmaniacs groove.

Baca is a legend on the bajo sexto, a 12-string guitar-like instrument, and his nephew, Josh Baca, is fast attaining legendary status on the accordion, with those two instruments creating the core of the lively conjunto sound.

While Baca has participated on 11 Grammy award-winning projects, the band themselves won its first Grammy in 2010 and a nomination for its last Smithsonian Folkways recording in 2019, "Borders y Bailes" - featuring Lyle Lovett and Rick Trevino.

Whether playing an intimate house concert or as an acoustic trio to rocking stage/theater/street dances the band always entertains and educates.

Tickets for this show are: Floor, rows A-D, $30; floor, rows E-M, $25; standard balcony, $20; and balcony box, $50 (includes concessions).

Cummings brings Blues to Cactus

Albert Cummings brings his new Blues album "Ten" tour to the Cactus Theater at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18.

From his first album, the burgeoning blues world of the 2000s opened its doors for Cummings. He recorded several albums for Blind Pig Records, and on 2012's "No Regrets" the guitarist extended the boundaries outside the blues world to include country and rock influences like he really hadn't before.

It was obvious that the musician did not want to limit himself in any way, and saw a wider possibility for where his music could go. With its release on Cummings’ own indie label imprint, Ivy Music, "Ten" is a full realization of that possibility.

Tickets for this show are: All floor and balcony seats, $20; and balcony box (includes concessions), $40.
