Alamo hosting 'Casablanca' brunch

"Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine…”

There is no more beloved American film than "Casablanca".

Join Alamo Drafthouse for a special menu brunch and screening of "Casablanca" at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 6.

Director Michael Curtiz’s iconic wartime romantic epic — in which American tough-guy Rick (Humphrey Bogart), proprietor of a classy nightclub in Vichy-controlled Casablanca, re-encounters ex-flame Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), now married to a heroic resistance leader (Paul Henreid) wanted by the Nazis — is the most famous high-point of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

"Casablanca" represents the epitome of the legendary Bogart screen persona — cynical, solitary, sardonic, self-reliant, world-weary, anti-heroic, but ultimately redeemable by love.

When rerouted to Witchita, Neal reluctantly partners with Del Griffith (Candy), an obnoxious yet loveable salesman. Together, they embark on a cross-country adventure that includes multiple modes of transportation, unbelievable mishaps, intimate motel accommodations, and unforgettable rental car shenanigans. It’s a must-see holiday adventure from writer, director, and producer John Hughes ("Home Alone").

This special screening includes a look at never-before-seen, recently discovered footage from the filmmaker's archives.

TTU Presidential Series continues with Davina and the Vagabonds

The Texas Tech University Presidential Lecture and Performance Series continues Nov. 10 with Davina and the Vagabonds at 7 p.m. in the Allen Theatre on the Texas Tech campus.

New spin on an old sound, Davina and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene with their high-energy live shows and commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, the band is converting audiences one show at a time, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe.

Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice: she is a true original. Bringing you 100 years of American music and Davina’s originals, which lend themselves to the American Songbook, the band brings edgy nostalgia to older generations and fresh new music to younger ears. This rollicking quintet is held together by Sowers’ keyboard playing, with acoustic bass, drums, and a spicy trumpet and trombone horn section. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments is novel to both blues and jazz worlds, and sets the show closer to New Orleans than to Chicago.

General admission tickets for this performance are $17 and available online through selectaseatlubbock.com
