Light as a feather, stiff as a board. Who doesn't love a good high school movie cliche? Well, "The Craft" takes all of those vital elements and throws in some black magic to create a thoroughly entertaining Gen-X witches' brew.
This film is about as insane as '90s Hollywood could get. New girl in school, Sarah (Robin Tunney), becomes instantly cooler when you realize she's a natural witch, while the goth girl, Nancy (Fairuza Balk, who should've spurned a whole new Oscar category for Best Crazy Eyes) becomes tremendously freakier when you realize that she can kill you on a whim.

Unfortunately…the murderer gets murdered and the victim survives. But this doesn't baffle the husband: He sees his hireling's death as an opportunity to have his wife convicted for the murder of the man who tried to murder her, and that is what almost happens…

Moonlight Musicals presents 'Into the Woods'
Lubbock Moonlight Musicals presents "Into the Woods" at 8 p.m. on Oct. 13-15, 20-22 and 27-29 at the the Moonlight Musicals Amphitheatre, 413 E. Broadway.
The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from "Little Red Riding Hood" (spelled "Ridinghood" in the published vocal score), "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Rapunzel", and "Cinderella", as well as several others.
The musical is tied together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family (the original beginning of the Grimm Brothers' "Rapunzel"), their interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them, and their interaction with other storybook characters during their journey.

Arts event benefits youth
The Lubbock Arts Alliance presents The Wishing Bowl Event featuring the pottery and ceramics of the Llano Estacado Clay Guild, from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.
It will be held in the Banquet Hall at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, 1501 Mac Davis Lane.
A $45 ticket includes dinner, drink, and you get to choose a one-of-a kind bowl from a local artisan to take home.There will also be live music, a cash bar and a silent auction. Cocktail attire is suggested.
Proceeds will benefit art education programs for at-risk children in the community.

Jab Fest 2022 set for Oct. 14-15
Jab Fest 2022, hosted by the Josh Abbott Band, is set for Oct. 14 and 15 at the Panhandle South Plains Fairgrounds.

LCT presents 'She Kills Monsters'

Written by Qui Nguyen and directed by Meg Davis, "She Kills Monsters" tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly.
When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she finds herself catapulted into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was her sister’s refuge.
In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

Chorale presents 'American Folk Songs'
The Lubbock Chorale presents American Folk Songs at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, for its season opener at the Hemmle Recital Hall on the Texas Tech University campus.
American folk songs have long been a celebrated part of the choral repertoire. The opening concert will feature folk songs arranged by two of the world’s best-known arrangers: Mack Wilberg and Shawn Kirchner.
Written for exciting eight-part choir and four-hand piano accompaniments, Wilberg’s arrangements are full and bombastic in nature, filling the concert hall with excitement and awe. Kirchner’s contrast considerably in their folksy style with banjo and fiddle-like accompaniments or a cappella settings.
Through the arrangements of both individuals, The Lubbock Chorale will highlight Americana through tremendous choral singing, bringing a sense of pride to the Lubbock community.

Teddy Swims brings tour to Lubbock
Teddy Swims is scheduled to bring his Freak Freely U.S. Fall Tour to the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.
The 29-year-old artist, who merges honeyed soul with raucous rock energy and pleasing pop hooks, writes nearly all his songs about falling in or out of romantic entanglements. He zeroes in his focus on his latest EP, "Tough Love" — a six-song collection of heartbreak horror stories and earnest declarations of devotion.
The Atlanta native, born Jaten Dimsdale, has been tugging at heartstrings since posting a series of covers from his bedroom studio, which generated hundreds of millions of views and scored him a deal with Warner Records. Heavily influenced by slashers of the late '70s/'80s, "Scream" single-handedly ushered in the return of the popular horror subgenre, which many considered dead and buried. By taking a meta approach to the standard “rules” (the virginal final girl, the bait and switch with the killer's identity, etc.), screamwriter Kevin Williamson and master director Wes Craven ("A Nightmare on Elm Street") upended everything we thought we knew about horror films, honoring and discarding time-worn formulas and terrifying audiences in the process.

Lubbock Book Festival set for Oct. 15-16
Literacy Lubbock and the Lubbock Public Libraries have partnered to co-host the 3rd Chapter of the Lubbock Book Festival.
This event aims to celebrate the written word, connect authors and readers, showcase local authors, and fundraise for Literacy Lubbock’s adult education programs. The festival is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 and 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Mahon Library. A special kick-off Prologue Party for donors, sponsors, VIP badge holders, and authors is set for 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 at the LHUCA.
During the festival, local authors will have booths on our Expo Floor, located throughout the stacks of Mahon Library’s first floor. They will sell books, sign copies, and interact with readers. Scheduled programming will cover a bevy of topics from industry experts, authors, and publishers. A Writer’s Workshop will have scheduled meet times during the festival, where authors in all stages of their writing journey, from newbie to published author, can network, hone their craft, and learn tips and tricks of the industry. In the VIP Lounge, paid attendees will enjoy amenities and perks associated with their badge purchase. Outside, local songwriters, performers, and organizations will entertain audiences.

Join investigative filmmaker Timothy Mahoney in his next leg of the Patterns of Evidence adventure as he looks for physical evidence of the Exodus journey to Mt Sinai. Did this biblical event really happen as written in the Bible? Some experts say not, yet Exodus Explorers claim they have found physical evidence to support one of the greatest events recorded in the Bible.
"The Journey to Mount Sinai" is the first in a two-film investigation following the Israelite's journey from the parting of the sea to the mountain. Many different mountains have been proposed as the true location of Mount Sinai. In the investigation, Mahoney will look at biblical, geographical, and archaeological information pointing to clues as to the real location of the mountain.
Can we find this mountain where Moses encountered a burning bush and heard the voice of God commanding him to return with the Israelites?

Wilder Blue brings Americana to Cactus

Cooks hosting Party in the Panhandle

Alamo to screen 1960's 'Psycho'
Alamo Drafthouse Lubbock presents the Hitchcock horror classic "Psycho" at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
Sixty years on and Hitchcock’s delicious cod-Freudian nightmare about a platinum-blonde embezzler (Janet Leigh) who neglected to consult a guide before selecting her motel still has much to answer for. It blazed a bloody trail for the much-loved slasher cycle, but it also assured us that a B-movie could be A-grade in quality and innovation.
It dared to suggest that your star didn’t need to surface from an ordeal smelling of roses (or, indeed, at all). It combined a knife, a scream, a melon, some chocolate sauce, Bernard Herrmann’s greatest score, and more than 70 edits to push the envelope of screen violence.
It lent The Simpsons some of its best gags. It offers perfect case studies of suspense, paranoia, and montage for lazy film-studies tutors.
And, of course, it was the first movie to show a toilet flushing, so we might also credit it with spawning the entire gross-out genre. "Psycho": We salute you. (David Jenkins, Time Out)

Johnson brings music to Holly Hall
Singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson brings his music to the Helen Devitt Jones Theater of Buddy Holly Hall at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28.
The 11-timeGrammy-nominated singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson is “one of the greatest country singers of our time,” according to the Washington Post.
He is one of only a few people in the history of country music to win two Song of the Year Awards from both the CMA and ACMs. His 2008 album, That Lonesome Song, was certified platinum for 1 million in sales, and his 2010 ambitious double album, The Guitar Song, received a gold certification.
Special guest will be Kylie Frey.

Alamo's Graveyard Shift screening 'Trick 'r Treat'
Join the Alamo Drafthouse Graveyard Shift for a special screening of "Trick 'r Treat" at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28.
Before Michael Doughtery was scarring Christmas memories with his holiday horror classic "Krampus" or ushering in kaiju carnage in "Godzilla: King of the Monsters", the writer/director burst into the hearts of horror fans with his Halloween-based anthology "Trick 'r Treat".
Weaving together stories about killers, monsters, ghosts and ghouls, Doughtery’s movie is a tongue-in-cheek, gleefully scary celebration of the season that stars Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker and a pumpkin-headed lil’ monster named Sam.

Cinemark hosts double feature 'Creature', 'Phantom'
Cinemark Movies 16 and XD,5721 58th St., is hosting a double feature of horror classics "Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954) and "Phantom of the Opera" (1943) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.
Perfectly blending Universal's classic monster heritage with the science-fiction explosion of the 1950s, "Creature from the Black Lagoon" tells the mythical story of a dangerous half-human, half-fish creature lurking in the depths of the Amazon. After discovering a unique prehistoric claw fossil on an expedition deep in the jungle, scientists investigate its origins which lead them directly to a mysterious creature.
Led by ichthyologist David Reed (Richard Carlson), the men try to capture the monster who has become obsessed with David's assistant, Kay (Julia Adams). Originally released in 3D, this thrilling adventure inspired sequels, TV series and more that continue to strengthen the monster's legacy to this day.
One of the most popular stories of all time, Gaston Leroux's "Phantom of the Opera" is the legendary horror tale starring Claude Rains as the masked phantom of the Paris Opera House. Following a tragic accident that leaves him disfigured, crazed composer Erique Claudin transforms into a masked phantom who schemes to make beautiful young soprano Christine Dubois (Susanna Foster) the star of the opera and wreak revenge on those who stole his music.
A heroic baritone (Nelson Eddy) tries to win the affections of Christine as he tracks down the disfigured "monster" who has begun murdering those who resist his mad demands. Inspired by the original 1925 silent version, this lavish Technicolor production remains one of the most unforgettable adaptations ever to be filmed.

The Texas Tech University Opera presents "Suor Angelica" Nov. 3-6 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

Piff the Magic Dragon and Puddles Pity Party bring their Misery Loves Company Tour to the Helen Devitt Jones Theater of Buddy Holly Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3.
The surly sleight of hander Piff the Magic Dragon (accompanied by his sidekick Mr. Piffles, the world’s only magic performing chihuahua) has won several Best of Las Vegas awards for his long-running show at the iconic Flamingo Hotel & Casino.
Piff blends magic with comedy resulting in “the right amount of wrong” (Las Vegas Review Journal) for “an outrageously funny…nonstop hour of pure, delirious fun” (Robin Leach, Las Vegas Sun).

Flatlands Dance presents 'Evolution of Gaia'
Flatlands Dance Theatre presents "Evolution of Gaia" at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4 and 5 at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts Firehouse Theatre.
"Evolution of Gaia" is Flatlands Dance Theatre’s most ambitious project yet. A large-scale performance fusing original dance, live and recorded music, film, and media, the production tells the tale of Gaia, the personification of Earth.
Through a compelling story centered on human relationships and cultures, the production interweaves topics such as the destruction and regenerative capacity of Earth’s natural landscapes and resources, environmental awareness and justice, cycles of birth and rebirth, and of conflict and resolution.
Choreographers Ali Duffy and Sarah Estrada, composer Peter Fischer of the TTU School of Music, and Georgia-based guest choreographer/filmmaker Melissa Pihos join together to create this complex, immersive performance experience.
Dancers from FDT perform alongside faculty and students of the TTU Schools of Music and Theatre and Dance.

Moore concert rescheduled for Nov. 5
The Justin Moore concert originally scheduled for March 11 has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in the Helen Devitt Jones Theater of Buddy Holly Hall.

TTU Presidential Series continues with Davina and the Vagabonds
The Texas Tech University Presidential Lecture and Performance Series continues Nov. 10 with Davina and the Vagabonds at 7 p.m. in the Allen Theatre on the Texas Tech campus.
New spin on an old sound, Davina and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene with their high-energy live shows and commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, the band is converting audiences one show at a time, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe.
Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice: she is a true original. Bringing you 100 years of American music and Davina’s originals, which lend themselves to the American Songbook, the band brings edgy nostalgia to older generations and fresh new music to younger ears. This rollicking quintet is held together by Sowers’ keyboard playing, with acoustic bass, drums, and a spicy trumpet and trombone horn section. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments is novel to both blues and jazz worlds, and sets the show closer to New Orleans than to Chicago.

Allen brings comedy to Hub City
Award-winning actor and comedian Tim Allen continues to perform stand-up shows to sold-out crowds across the country.
