Who should be the Lubbock A-J student of the week?

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal accepts nominations for high school students each week until noon Sunday by emailing newmedia@lubbockonline.com. Online voting begins at 5 a.m. Monday at lubbockonline.com. The poll runs through 5 p.m. Thursday, with the winner announced Friday.

How to nominate

► School district officials can nominate a high school student for next week's award by emailing newmedia@lubbockonline.com by Sunday morning.

► Include nomination with grade level and two or three sentences highlighting achievements by the student.

Here are this week's nominees

Marcos Cuevas, sophomore at Estacado High School

Marcos is a member of the swim team, One Act Play and Early College High School. He broke the Estacado swim record in the 100-yard backstroke, passed his Spanish 4 AP test to receive college credit, is currently taking dual credit courses with Texas Tech University through the Estacado Early College High School, and is a straight A student.

Anastyn Greaser, junior at Monterey High School

Anastyn was selected "Outstanding Attorney" for the Regional Mock Trial competition during the second round of the regional competition. She and her teammates finished the contest undefeated and as the number one seed advancing to the regional semi-final this week. Anastyn is a member of the pom squad, volleyball team, and student council while maintaining a straight A average.

Hannah Nicholas, Lubbock-Cooper High School

Hannah has been named a Delegate in the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. This prestigious conference is an honors program designed for high school students aspiring to pursue careers in medicine or medical research. Hannah's nomination, endorsed by Nobel Prize winner and Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Dr. Mario Capecchi, is a testament to her academic achievements, leadership potential, and dedication. Over the three-day Congress in June, Hannah will engage with students from across the nation, attend lectures by Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners, receive guidance from Ivy League and top medical school deans, and gain insights into cutting-edge advances in medicine and medical technology.

Juan Alejos Rivera, Frenship Ninth Grade Center

Juan's principal says he is an outstanding student. Juan does well in school and is always so kind and courteous with his peers and teachers. He is a great chess player who has helped other students learn how to play chess, making friends along the way. Juan is a student with integrity who is a joy to have at the Frenship Ninth Grade Center.
